Richard & Ben Hoerlein
About Me
Richard is 51 years old and is a Certified Financial Planner.
Ben 17 years old and is a senior at Auburn High School
Richard is married to Charlotte. She is a cardiac nurse on the 2nd Floor at East Alabama Medical Center. I hope you never need to see her, but if you do, she is an awesome nurse.
Daughter, Kathryn, is a sophomore in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Auburn University
Youngest son, Richie, is a 5th grader at Wrights Mill Elementary.
Members of the Month: January 2012
Richard and Ben’s nomination from personal trainer, Emily, and from Ben’s trainer, Lesley Binning
I started working with Richard in May 2011. Originally, he had come to a trainer primarily to improve his balance and strengthen his core. We worked together for a little over 5 months and saw very noticeable gains after re-assessing. The gains were not only seen in balance and core strength. They were also seen in body fat percentage, weight loss, he came off his BP meds, flexibility and in his waist circumference. At that time, Richard decided he was ready for a new physical challenge.. Our new goal set at the beginning of November was to strengthen core again and to work on leg strength as well. Richard never complains during his workouts. However, at the end of our sessions you will see him stumbling in the office after working so hard for me. He's acquired chiseled legs, firm arms, and a much stronger, healthier mid section (not to mention his much improved posture!). Recently, he sent a text to me after our workout saying "my arms were shaking until 10am" (after training that day at 6:30am). Also, despite his busy family life and a demanding career, Richard NEVER cancels and is ALWAYS on time and warmed up before our workouts! Thanks Richard for your continued hard work and striving to be a physical role model for your children! Keep up the great work!
While working out with Emily in the wee hours of the summer, Richard would see me putting athletes to work on the treadmill. After inquiring from Emily about what exactly was going on in my corner, he approached me about his son, Ben, a twelfth grade swimmer who attends Auburn High School and swims for Auburn Aquatics. Ben is a strong, talented swimmer, but he was looking for a way to get an edge on his competitors and to open the eyes of university swim coaches. Ben has been coming to workout on the Athletic Republic treadmill, plyometic board and plyo press two mornings per week since August of this year. We are doing a 2:1 ratio of plyometric to treadmill sessions to work on his explosive power off the blocks and off the wall. We have also been working on core strength and hip stability and flexibility with our Pro Multi Hip. At the start of the month Ben placed 3rd in the state meet in the 100 m breaststroke and helped his relay team earn a 2nd place finish. More importantly, Ben swam personal best times. Ben’s commitment to achieving his goals is evident. A swimmers schedule is grueling with 2 a day practices and early mornings, but Ben is willing to add two extra practices to that schedule to take his training to a whole new level. Another amazing quality that Ben has is his ability to push himself above and beyond. I have to beg Ben to rest between sets so he can perform each set at an optimal level.
Richard and Ben are competitive amongst each other in a fun father-son manner. The first day Ben came in to meet me and discuss the program he and Richard wanted to test their vertical jump. I believe that Richard edged Ben slightly on that first day. We just recently tested again and Ben got Richard by 1 inch but both performed better than the first time we did it. Supposedly, they also like to compare the sizes of different muscle groups but you will have to personally ask them more about that.
Both Richard and Ben have been great to work with. Both stumble in from bed but workout as hard as or harder than any of our other clients. It is always exciting and rewarding as a trainer to see transformations take place, but it is the dedication of the trainee that decides the outcome. This father and son duo have done an amazing job executing what they are asked to do and therefore have reaped the benefits in many ways.
About Richard:
I have been a member of Health Plus since January of 2008. I had ballooned up to 223 pounds and felt very sluggish and was pre-diabetic. Joining Health Plus was a New Year’s resolution. I considered other health clubs, but when I toured Health Plus I quickly realized that they had everything for everybody! I appreciate the options of how you can exercise, and how the machines are very well maintained. Thanks Mike!
I realized that I had gradually lost some of my balance, and I wanted to strengthen my core. I had been observing the personal trainers and finally realized that I wanted to shake things up in my routine. I approached Emily because she is full of energy and very encouraging to her clients. She was very patient in listening to my goals and understanding my current health situation. My perception was that female trainers could not work me out as hard as male trainers. Boy, was that not the case with Emily! She makes me do exercises that I would never consider doing on my own. I mean like dead lifts?! She makes me want to do more with my physical fitness. I meet with her 2 times a week and work out at least another 3 times a week. Previously I was lucky to work out 2 times per week. I am convinced that I never would have been able to clean up our 20 downed trees in our yard after the recent tornado if it was not for Emily and Health Plus. My wife calls me her "little lumberjack".
About Ben:
He has been swimming with Auburn Aquatics since he was 9. He swims year round for approximately 20 hours per week. He wants to swim in college. We met with Lesley with Athletic Republic in August, and he started doing pylometrics with her 2 times per week. He has gotten much more explosive off the starting blocks and in his turns. His times have already decreased and he has 2 offers from Division 1 schools and a lot of interest from Division 2 schools. Exercising with Lesley has increased Ben’s confidence as he has a swagger on the pool deck.
Words of Wisdom
I would suggest that you consider the personal training options with Health Plus. They will have you do things you never thought you could which will make you want to do more. I have gone from 223 pounds to 185 in the last 4 years with Health Plus and Emily’s help. My blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol have all come down. My wife thinks I look younger than her even though she is 7 years younger. Thanks Health Plus!

About Me
40 years old
Program Director at East Alabama Mental health (I run group homes for adults with intellectual disabilities as well as mental illness)/li>
Member since May 2008
I chose HP over other gyms because of the "home like" feeling, HP is a place where everyone knows your name, or your face and you are treated like you matter.
Member of the Month: January 2012
Nomination submitted by personal trainer, Laure Butcher:
Tiffany has been a consistent morning member. She is here Mon-Fri and has lost a ton of weight. She is always pushing herself with new workouts and is so encouraging to other members. Whether she sees them in the locker room or on the track, she speaks to them and gives them encouraging words. She is an awesome person and I am so proud that she is a member of HealthPlus!
My Story
My fitness routine is 5 to six times a week, for almost two hours a day.
I do cardio, as well as weights.
I stay motivated by setting small goals for myself. When I started working out, I just wanted to drop some weight. 2010 was my 20 year high school reunion and I was turning 40 so I wanted to be healthy and look great for all these events in my life.
Words of Wisdom
Whatever, you do DON'T STOP working out!!! It is SO very easy to lose everything you have worked for....KEEP moving and MAKE it fun.
Kevin Kennedy
About Me
7 year-old from Auburn
First grade student at Richland Road Elementary School
Kevin and family (Mom-Jenn, Dad-Dan, Big Sister-Kylie, and Little Brother Quinn) have been members of HealthPlus since August, 2011.
Member of the Month: December 2011
Nomination submitted by his personal trainers, Emily & Patrick:
When Kevin started coming to HP last Spring, he could barely move or communicate. Despite no longer being able to do what any other boy his age could do, he constantly attempted to move and do what other kids did around him. After less than a year of training and physical therapy, Kevin is moving independently with a walker and chatting up his trainers during his sessions. He can jump in the pool, swin and has even starting taking some steps on his own. Kevin is the perfect example of never giving up and pushing forward. We are so proud of Kevin!
My Story
On June 3, 2010, Kevin had a massive brain tumor removed. Complications arose because of the size of the tumor (a small orange) and location (between his cerebellum and brain stem). The complications caused Kevin to have to relearn every aspect of his motor function over again. He's relearned all of basic life functions-- like how to swallow and is now currently working on walking without assistive devices.
They chose HP for many reasons--personal training, facility, the pool and caring staff. The personal trainers here are the best! Personal Training is an important part of Kevin's plan of care for his therapy. The Personal Trainers are responsible for a significant part of Kevin's motor function gains, strength training, strength gains and continued motivation. Emily and Patrick are more than just Personal Trainers though, they truly care about Kevin. They are always coming up with creative new and interesting ways to help Kevin work out and keep him motivated by being successful in his routines. Being 7 and staying focused is a challenge!
You can see Kevin every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with Emily and Patrick. Kevin also has Physical and Occupational Therapy Mondays and Wednesdays after school. Kevin is quite busy and can hardly wait to return to playing soccer and t-ball again like other boys his age. His work here at HealthPlus is gradually getting him closer to this goal!
Kevin often gets frustrated because he remembers and knows what it's like to walk and run and wants to be there again. Every day Kevin makes small gradual gains but often it is like climbing Mount Everest daily. It's hard to believe that this time last year Kevin couldn't sit up, talk, eat by mouth, or walk. He was confined to a wheel chair and little movement in his hands. He hopes to inspire people by showing that millions of small baby steps add up and can make a huge difference.

Megan works out very hard and has to push through difficult circumstances to exercise. Her dedication to her exercise routine is very admirable and she inspires those around her.
My Story
I have dysautonomia which is a general term used to describe a breakdown, or failure of the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system controls much of your involuntary functions. I can't sweat I don't have saliva and I can't produce tears. I've been sick 20 years and exercising is my best medicine. I want to help others like me who are sick. I love the gym and try to go once or twice a day. I love the classes also. I take boot camp, RIPPED, Circuits and Yoga. I have also worked out with a personal trainer, Laure Butcher, as well.
Bernard Murphy
About Me
77 years old
Member with wife, Susan, since HealthPlus opened!
Member of the Month: November 2011
Nomination Letter by Group Fitness Instructor, Robin Kurtz:
I nominate Bernard because he is a great role model and a really cool guy. Not only does he work out consistently and has worked through some health issues related to a car accident recently, he and his wife, Susan, also save and care for stranded cats!
My Story
Thank you for picking me as member of the month. 30 years, two airplanes later, and after running around the Arctic building airports, roads and radar sites, it was time to “go South!”
My best friend had died and left a beautiful widow who I started courting. I got her to see that traveling was a lot more fun than working. The next ten years we spent traveling, back packing in Canada and doing family research in England and Ireland.
It was getting time to stay close to home as Susan's mom was getting older. Susan was born and raised in Lafayette, Al. Susan went over to Sears one day and saw a poster for the opening of a health club called HealthPlus! Susan told me about the great pool so we signed up and we have been there ever since! I still swim four days a week for a total of 2 ½ miles a week.
I average 95-98 miles a year in the pool.
I broke my back a couple of years ago but I used to do weights in the range of 40,000 lbs., four or five times a week. Since the car wreck, I had to cut back a lot of the machines but I still lift 16,000 on Sundays. Swimming is my favorite thing! I plan to keep swimming until I end up floating face down!
Words of Wisdom

I increased my exercising at Health Plus to 3 to 5 days a week.

Kathy is one of four ladies who have been taking a variety of group fitness classes together for many years. They’re a dedicated, tight group of ladies who are in amazing shape. They’re an inspiration to other members and to their instructors.
My Story
As I approached 50, I noticed that my metabolism had taken a plunge. I joined HealthPlus with the expectation of toning muscle and keeping my weight down. I do not like to exercise in the morning, so the afternoon group classes at HealthPlus are great for me. I need a little nudge to stay in a fitness routine, so it helps to have friends like Allison, Shelia, and Alison in the classes to encourage me and to keep me accountable. I am currently doing Body Pump and Zumba classes twice a week after work. I walk/run outside or on the treadmill on other days.
The fitness instructors are well trained, enthusiastic, and supportive. I have been happy with my experience at HealthPlus.
Words of Wisdom
It doesn’t matter how much weight you lift in Body Pump or how goofy you think you look doing Zumba; it matters that you are doing it and having fun!

Allison is one of four ladies who have been taking a variety of group fitness classes together for many years. They’re a dedicated, tight group of ladies who are in amazing shape. They’re an inspiration to other members and to their instructors.
My Story
I am very blessed to be 5’10” tall and really have never had a weight problem. As I get older though, I can see the effects that my eating habits have had on my body. Since I love to eat, I decided to add more fitness to my life. I joined HealthPlus primarily for Body Pump, but have since started doing Zumba, and although I look ridiculous doing it, I love it! I try to do Body Pump and Zumba twice a week, at least, and walk/jog on other days. Group fitness seems to be the easiest thing for me. Having friends like Kathy, Sheila, and Alison that are always there motivates me to show up for class.
HealthPlus and the City of Auburn partnered to offer employees a wellness program. This program is the main reason that I decided to join HealthPlus. I participated in many of the classes offered through this program and was very satisfied with the offerings and the facility.
Words of Wisdom
I always feel the very best right after a work-out. I can be so tired and know I will never make it through a class, but at the end, it’s always a wonderful feeling. If you can just make it to the gym, it will always make you feel better physically and emotionally.

My Story
After years of working out at home with a treadmill and DVD's, I decided to join a gym. I found that it was too easy to say, " I don't feel like exercising today", when I was working out at home. I knew HealthPlus was where I wanted to be because they offer everything, and I wanted the flexibility to change my routine. I'm currently loving the group fitness classes. Body Pump, Yoga and Zumba enable me to not focus on cutting calories and the results I see on my body are pretty amazing. Not to mention how great I feel physically and emotionally. These are all super important when you're my age. My trick to staying consistent is that I view my classes as an appointment that I have to keep. I must have a really good reason to skip a class, and then I try to make it up at another time.
Thank you to all the group fitness instructor's for keeping the classes fun!!
Words of Wisdom
I would like to encourage everyone who hasn't tried the group classes to come join in on the fun. Your body will thank you for it!

Sheila is one of four ladies who have been taking a variety of group fitness classes together for many years. They’re a dedicated, tight group of ladies who are in amazing shape. They’re an inspiration to other members and to their instructors.
My Story
I joined Health Plus 3 years ago to have a place to run when the weather didn’t cooperate. I started out running on the treadmill and decided to have the fitness assessment offered to new members. I was told that because of my age, needed to add weight training to my routine so I worked out in the weight room for several months, but I dreaded having to do it. Then I saw banners promoting Body Pump so I decided to try it. I loved it! I have been going at least 2 times a week since it began. The instructors are all great as well as the music and I have become much stronger. After my experience with Body Pump I thought maybe I should check out the other classes, I heard about a dance class called Zumba, so I tried Sean & Becky’s Zumba class. It was so much fun and really a good work out. Another great thing about Zumba is that anyone can participate at any age. There are such a variety of people in that class. I met Alison, Kathy and Allison in Body Pump about a year and a half ago. Since Body Pump and Zumba are back-to-back two days a week, we motivate each other to stay for both. It is great knowing they will be there especially on those days when I do not feel like working out. I also continue trying to run 2 to 3 days a week. I also enjoy other classes occasionally to keep from getting bored with working out. I chose Health Plus because it is family friendly and has everything I was looking for in a fitness center. I am so glad to have Health Plus helping me to keep my fitness goals.
Words of Wisdom
For me, exercise is a very important part of my life because I believe if I take care of myself now it will pay off later. I believe to stay motivated to exercise you must choose workouts that you really enjoy, have friends that make it fun and hold you accountable, and whatever workout you choose, just keep moving!
Libba Brannon
About Me

Former teacher at Loachapoka Elementary School

Libba is always friendly to everyone. She always has a smile on her face no matter how tired she is. Most importantly, she inspires me to work out every day and want to improve myself. She always has words of encouragement when I don’t feel like working out. She is just so inspiring!
My Story
I chose HealthPlus over other gyms because of everything the gym offers. It’s more than just a weight-room, it’s a Health CLUB! I love group fitness classes and it seems like there is a great class offered at just about any time throughout the day. I also have a lot of friends that are members here and that keep me motivated and hold me accountable for my workouts. I also love the pool, steam room, and locker room facilities. It’s nice to be able to comfortably get ready for the day at the gym and not have to waste time driving back home before work or errands. The staff is another HUGE reason I stay at HealthPlus. Everyone is very friendly and when you build relationships with the staff it makes it easier to workout everyday. I look forward to coming because I enjoy seeing the friends I’ve made here.
My Routine
My fitness routine is all over the place! I much prefer group fitness classes to individual workouts because I’m a social person. I like to visit with friends while I workout so the time passes more quickly. I really enjoy Susan’s, Laure’s, and Amy’s Circuits classes. I also enjoy Body Pump no matter who is teaching! I use Water Aerobics and Water in Motion to break up the monotony of the group room and to give my joints a break. My friend, Anna, and I have also added Patrick as our Personal Trainer this summer. He is an excellent teacher and keeps everything fun and exciting. He mixes up our workouts so our bodies don’t get used to the same exercises. Having him train us has given us that extra boost we’ve needed.
No matter what class or activity I do, I try to come to the gym at least once per day. Once school starts again, I’ll get back on my 5:00 a.m. schedule of treadmill for 30 minutes followed by 5:30 Body Pump on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. A good workout and a good breakfast get my day off to a GREAT start!
Social motivation is the biggest key for me. Sometimes I’ll come to the gym twice in a day just to be able to spend time with friends! I usually plan the day before and find out who is coming and when. I know it’s more fun for us when we do things together. We can encourage each other and make working out fun instead of something we feel like we “have” to do.
Words of Wisdom
“Keep at it!” When we let too many days come between our workouts, we lose motivation and get out of the habit of working out. Whatever you have to do to get here, just do it!
Deedie Dowdle
About Me
Age -- I am ageless, thank you!!
Married to Dow Scoggins
Mother of 3 boys
Executive Director, Office of Communications & Marketing, Auburn University
HP Member since 2006 but I really stepped up the workouts about 18 months ago and feel better and stronger than ever; my husband joined a year or so after I did, and our kids enjoy the pool
Member of the Month: June 2011
Nomination submitted by Group Fitness Instructor, Lori Fuller:
I met Deedie during Body Pump class and I quickly learned that Deedie is dedicated to her fitness routine! As an extremely, busy mother of 3 boys who also works outside of the home, she squeezes in her workouts whenever she can and doesn’t let being late to class stop her from coming! Some people think that if they miss the beginning of class or even half the class, they shouldn’t come at all but Deedie is proof that isn’t true. If she misses a few songs, she still tries to focus on the body parts that she didn’t get to work on and she will go in the weight room afterwards to make sure she gets a complete body workout. She also incorporates swimming and yoga into her routine and recognizes the importance of variety in your fitness routine that prevents boredom and burnout. Deedie always has a smile on her face and it’s obvious that she loves life and feels good because she has made fitness a priority!
My Story
While there are other places closer to the office, the comprehensiveness of HealthPlus is why I chose to become a member. It has one of the friendliest staffs at a health club that I've ever experienced (here or in Atlanta, where I used to live); and the variety of class offerings allows me to try new things while also doing what I know works.
My fitness routine includes swimming 2 miles on Sundays, Body Pump on Tuesdays at lunch, my own workout Thursdays at lunch (cardio/weight machines), and weekend yoga on Saturdays. I like to keep my body totally confused and always sore. Since I have an enjoyable but intense job, I've noticed a big difference in my attitude when I stay physically active, and, because I have three boys, I think it's important that they see their parents being active and healthy, so that they, too, will be motivated. Also, I play a lot of sports with them and like being able to catch them and out-throw them with a frisbee.
Words of Wisdom
What keeps me motivated? I've always said that while I don't always enjoy exercising, I love "having exercised." Staying strong and in shape is the ONE area of my life I can control, and that's addictive.

Linda has consistently exercised at HealthPlus for many years. She always has a smile on her face and is so dedicated to her routine. She has been through a lot of health challenges lately and her busy schedule can be hectic, but she still makes exercising a priority. I enjoy having her attend many of my group fitness classes and I’m inspired by her commitment!
My Story
Ever since my children were in school, I have been committed to exercise. My favorite is step aerobics. Life has always been rather stress full to say the least. I grew up dancing, and love the step classes, turbo jam, and now Zumba classes. Where else can you jump up and down like a idiot and have it socially acceptable? What a destressor!!
In 2008, I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. In 2009, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Certainly this was life changing for me. The Lord impressed on me that our life here on earth is just a short path to Eternity. And I really need to focus on Him.
After three surgeries and chemotherapy I am now cancer free and almost back to my old exercise routine!! Because I had always exercised, my recovery time was much shorter than to be expected {Praise the Lord!}, and I did well with my chemotherapy with few side effects. I was even able to work and see my patients during this trying time. I love HealthPlus. The facilities are clean, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and they even include those little things like a private dressing room, towels, clean showers, secure lockers that really count! The Lord really uses HealthPlus and I really appreciate the part that this facility has played in my life.

Member of the Month: May 2011
Nomination submitted by registered dietitian Noelle Stewart
I met Jane during nutrition counseling sessions that we had together to prepare for her 1st marathon. I was impressed by her dedication to learning how to properly eat and her desire to train correctly. She followed the nutritional plan and training schedule we designed and she did GREAT!!
My Story
After a friend invited me to a Zumba class at HealthPlus, I was hooked from that day on. I had been a member of another local health club and had also frequented the Student Act on campus. Neither one of the options covered all of my needs so I was always looking for the right fit. I was used to doing my workouts early in the morning before work and HP had plenty to offer including varied class times, plenty of cardio & weight equipment and a knowledgeable staff of professionals.
My typical week includes Body Pump three times a week with Amanda and Holly at 5:30 am and Zumba with Sean in the evenings. I also run with a wonderful group of ladies 3 mornings a week. If the weather doesn’t allow me to run outside, I just jump into an RPM class with Amanda and get my miles in that way.
My weekends include yoga with Ashley to keep running injuries at bay.
In the spring of 2010, my running buddies decided it was time for us to do a full marathon, a first for all of us. We began training in September and as I was pushing my mileage and speed I started to experience “hitting the wall.” I made an appointment with HealthPlus’ registered dietitian, Noelle Stewart to help me figure out what and when to eat to fuel my training, how to get past the energy slump, and to establish guidelines for meals and snacks to avoid packing on pounds while training since all that running makes you really hungry! Noelle set up an eating plan for me and made some suggestions on pre-run meals. She gave me specific instructions on how much and how often I needed to eat during the race to stay energized. With her eating plan and advice on fueling, I was able to complete my 1st marathon in New Orleans as my 45th birthday challenge! I NEVER HIT THE WALL!
For me, I have several things I use to stay motivated; a large group of workout buddies that hold me accountable if I get lazy, a physical goal to work towards such as a bench press contest or a marathon, and if my motivation gets really low, I pick something tangible I really want as a reward that I’m not allowed to have until I meet my goal.
Words of Wisdom
One of my mantras during the marathon training was a quote from a famous runner Dean Karnazes: "Nobody cares if you're not a good dancer. Just get up and dance. The same holds true for racing. Whether first or last, we all cross that same finish line. Just get out there and run!"

Member of the Month: May 2011
Nomination submitted by instructor, Lori Fuller:
Tom and Sam have been coming to my yoga class for a few years. They hold eachother accountable by being “fitness buddies.” They encourage each other (and give each other a hard time but in a fun way!) They seem to really enjoy eachother’s company while working out together! I love that they are unafraid to take yoga because many people of all ages, but especially men (and women!) of their age, are intimidated by many of the yoga poses and think that they aren’t “flexible or strong enough” for yoga. Instead, Tom and Sam embrace the challenge of yoga and appreciate the many benefits that they receive from the practice. They don’t give up or get discouraged if a pose is challenging for them but instead they work harder to reach their goals! They have improved their flexibility, balance and strength over the years. They both have a great sense of humor and they’re always smiling and seem to truly enjoy life! Their positive attitudes are contagious! I’m proud of their commitment to fitness. They’re a great testimony to the value of “fitness buddies” and how important it is to have someone hold you accountable! Keep up the great work guys!

We have similar workout interests and we have pumped iron, ran, and biked together basically since the year we met. We also like Hardee’s bacon, egg, and cheese biscuits, so we need to keep our routine constant: "miss a work out, miss a biscuit!"
Over the years, we worked out at Gold’s Gym, World’s Gym, and others around Auburn. Finally, we could no longer stand the loudness and “style” of the music at these other gyms and migrated to the relative peace and quiet of HealthPlus. In fact, when we came to HealthPlus for a “tour,” we told Barry we didn’t need a tour of the facilities, but just let us listen to the music for a few minutes.
70s, 80s, and oldies! We signed up that day!
As far as workout routine is concerned, we like to mix it up a little. So, we lift light weights once a week, then heavy (for us!) once a week. Upper body twice a week, legs once a week. In winter, our cardio admittedly suffers some, but we bike outside 2 or 3 times a week, weather permitting, or do the spin classes, if not. Since flexibility, balance, and core strength are so very important, we also take Yoga and Pilates classes about twice a week.
Sam’s motto has always been “consistency is king” so that keeps us motivated. Also, we try to laugh a lot! If you’re not having a good time, you won’t come back. We highly recommend partnering up with someone of approximately equal skills who can make you laugh. Some gym members have occasionally commented how strong our jaws must be because we are always working them.
Hey! The jaw is part of the upper body, right?

Tony and his wife Ruby Lee have been members at Health Plus for a very long time! Tony has just recently undergone a successful heart transplant. His unwavering faith in the Lord and his commitment to both exercise and diet have been an inspiration to myself and others. Thanks Tony!
My Story
My fitness routine consists of lifting weights and swimming twice a week. I walk on the treadmill or in my neighborhood 5 to 6 times a week. (I am currently in rehab at the hospital). I’ve had heart problems since 1985 and I’m a recent heart transplant patient (Dec. 2010). My motivation comes from a desire to remain as fit and as mobile as possible. In addition to exercise, I have followed a heart healthy diet since 1985.

Member of the Month: May 2011
Nomination submitted by members Tom Tole, Sam McCord and personal trainer, Len Williamson:
Dick has a lot of arthritis. Both of his knees have been replaced. He had ankle surgery and surgery on both shoulders. Dick is one of the most aggressive members with his workouts. He hits the cardio equipment hard, at a fast pace and with lots of resistance for about 45 minutes, 3 times a week. He has a tough weight routine as well. He also rides his bike outside twice a week, weather permitting. Dick has lost over 30 pounds since joining the gym. He is very active as a volunteer in the community. He and his wife, Barb, spend several hours daily helping raise their grandchildren. Dick even makes them walk over a mile to and from school with him!
My Story
Ever since I graduated from college I have been active in sports --- SCUBA Diving, running, swimming, tennis, squash, racquetball, biking and even flying airplanes. Sometime during the 90's, arthritis caught up to me and I started to slow down --- which practically put an end to my activities. I started gaining weight! I have since replaced both knees, operated on both shoulders and froze all the joints in 1 foot. Now I'm back and better than ever. An ideal week starts with my wife & me walking two of our grandchildren to school, which is a little less than 2 miles round trip. I work out at HealthPlus on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. I do weight training for 45 minutes and cardio for 45 minutes. I even endure a half hour of Pilates on Mondays & Wednesdays, which, I believe, has helped relive some back issues.
Fridays and Sundays are reserved for bike riding. I try to average 45 to 55 miles a week, weather permitting. On Fridays, I ride with several other HealthPlus members who are somewhat younger than me. They push me to my limits. Sunday morning, early, I ride alone. In the last 10 years, since joining HealthPlus, I have been able to lose 30 pounds and get my Body Fat down to 15.5%. I've got a new body and I'm loving it.
Words of Wisdom
If you have arthritis so my best words of advice would be to (1) keep moving & (2) lose weight. There is no better place to do both than HealthPlus. Their facilities are second to none and their personnel are knowledgeable and eager to help. I have made lots of good friends here.

I've been watching Paul's rehabilitation process ever since I started working at HP in 2008. I've seen him working in the pool, weight room and on the track. He works so hard every time he is here. Recently, I was running around the lake and almost got run over by Paul and his trainer, Emily, who were flying around the lake on his bike! I'm so impressed and inspired by his determination and persistence! He has made such amazing progress and never gives up! Keep up the great work, Paul! You're our inspiration!
Nomination submitted by personal trainer, Emily Ansick:
Paul and his wife, Tammy, are determined to never stop improving! Paul has come faithfully to therapy with me and with other physical, occupational, speech, etc therapists for over two years now. They drive all the way from Smiths Station to Auburn almost daily to some sort of therapy. Every session, Paul tells stories of his life prior to the accident and how he dreams of doing things like driving his dump truck and catching lobsters while diving again. It's simple everyday tasks that we all take for granted that Paul dreams about daily. Every time I work with Paul I am reminded to appreciate every moment and NEVER take the simple blessings for granted. I truly do hope one day that Paul's dreams come true… and that he and his wife live a long life of emotional prosperity and betterment! We all know he and Tammy have worked hard enough for this simple dream.
My Story
Paul works out twice a week at HealthPlus. One day he works on the fitness floor and the other day he is in the pool or riding his adult trike around the lake. Paul works out every day at our house. He has a walking routine that includes going up and down the driveway and he works on exercises that Emily has taught him to do at home.
Paul was extremely active before his anoxic brain injury 4 years ago. He enjoyed activities such as cycling, scuba diving, canoeing, kayaking, playing pick up games of football and basketball -- pretty amazing for an "old guy!" Paul is steadily progressing. Every day, I see the "old Paul" returning. There are times that he wants to give up but he quickly gets over that and gets on his tennis shoes and out the door he goes!
His biggest encouragement is from people telling him how great he is doing and how far he has come! Thanks for the great support from HealthPlus staff and members who are cheering for Paul!

I got to know Brandy well during her pregnancy as she took my Body Pump classes. I was so impressed with her determination to stay active and fit during her entire pregnancy. As I watched her tummy grow, it never slowed her down and she worked just as hard in class before her pregnancy as she did to the very last workout prior to giving birth to her first son. She safely adjusted her form to adapt to her growing belly but never slacked off on her effort! She continued her workout routine soon after and quickly reshaped her body to even better shape than it was before! She always has a positive attitude and enjoys the break she gets at the gym as a new mother! Way to go Brandy! You're a great inspiration to all future mothers and to us all!
My Story
I chose HealthPlus over other gyms because of the variety of the classes offered, the convenience of the class times and I felt like the membership cost was reasonable. My fitness routine currently is 4 days of cardio and 1-2 days of weight training per week. I've started running with a group of women three days a week since the weather is warming up.
One thing that keeps me motivated is that my family has a strong history of heart disease. I'm working hard now to avoid having to deal with this problem when I'm older. I see people everyday on my job whose health would be so much better if the had taken better care of themselves when they were younger. I'd like to keep myself in good enough shape that I can continue to work out throughout my lifetime. Now that I'm a mother, I also want to set a good example for my son. I want him to see his father and I working out, running, walking, going to the gym and understand that its just part of a normal, healthy life.
When I began college, I started a regular fitness routine to stay in shape. For years, physical exercise has just been part of my everyday life. When I became pregnant, I had a lot of concerns about what the pregnancy would do to my body. I worried about the same things that every pregnant woman worries about: gaining too much weight, getting stretch marks, and varicose veins. I discussed these concerns with my doctor and since I was already used to a fitness routine that included Body Pump and Zumba, he encouraged me to follow a sensible diet and continue these activities. I asked the instructors to provide me with some modifications to make these activities safe as my belly grew and, with their guidance, I was able to work out until just days before I had my son at 39 weeks. Through the course of my pregnancy, I gained 24 pounds and can honestly say that I never felt better. Within three weeks of having my son, I was back down to my pre-pregnancy weight and in my regular clothes. I am completely convinced that the fact that I continued to work out the way that I did during the pregnancy is responsible for how fast I got back into shape afterwards. Thanks HealthPlus!!!
Words of Wisdom

Tee is active in the pool and has been doing yoga for most of her life. She lost her husband 2 years ago and has rebounded fantastically. She is involved with her family, with a book group and lots and lots of other things. She has an upbeat personality and is just a wonderful person! Most of her family members are HP members, too! What an inspiration she is to me and to so many!
My Story
My husband and I went to HealthPlus to "check it out!" When someone showed us the pool, he dipped his hand in the water. It was nice and warm and he said, "Let's join!"
We chose HealthPlus because of the pool and the ambiance of the facility. Visiting with friends along with exercising is supportive, and group activities offer the opportunity for new friends.
I use the weight room three days a week, usually Tues, Thurs., Sat. or Sunday. I use the pool on Mon., Wed., Fri. The new "Water in Motion" class is a real winner. I also walk two miles at least 4 times a week, outside when pleasant and on the track other times. The motivation is simple - I have always exercised in one form or another for years and my body says "thank you" every day by giving me energy and keeping me healthy and in good condition.
I am very encouraged and supported by my family to keep up the exercise, as they all do themselves. This past July, my family and I spent two weeks in France and had a wonderful time, visiting with friends, walking in the mountains, climbing on winding stone steps in ancient villages, and partaking of great French food. I could do all of this because I was in good physical shape.
I can't say enough good things about HealthPlus!

My Story
When I was 2, I had a polio vaccination but I was allergic to it. I have polio centrum which kills muscle in my body. I work out to beat the odds!
When I was in college, I swam at the AU pool and I feel in love with swimming. I later moved to Montgomery to work for the Biscuits but I didn't have a pool or good place to work out (or time to work out anymore due to my job!) so I started gaining weight and got out of shape. When I moved back to Auburn, I had a friend who I used to swim with at AU who had joined HealthPlus and he asked me to go with him. I fell in love with the pool at HealthPlus. I swim an hour and a half almost every day and I also use the machines for weight training. I really love coming to HealthPlus!

My Story
I choose HP over other gyms because HP has so much variety to offer its members. Everyone is so nice and very helpful. I just love it! My fitness routin consists of cardio and weights 3-4 times a week. I hope to be adding some of the fitness classes soon. I am still trying to build up the muscles in my leg after a break in September, so hopefully just a few more weeks and I will be taking full advantage of all that HP has to offer.
I'm motivated to keep working out consistently because I am almost to my goal weight that I set for myself back in June of last year. I think that HP is just what I needed to get me to that all time goal! Also everyone knows that I am working out, and they ask about it constantly. I think that keeps me motivated because I want to keep showing them results and be a motivation to them.
Words of Wisdom
I think that everyone needs to remember that losing weight and getting healthy is a process. It takes time. In the beginning 4lbs in a month may not seem very much and hard to notice. BUT...over 3 months that's 12lbs and over 6 months that's 24lbs...and that is when you and everyone notices the change you have made. So just remember to be patient and keep working at it because in the end when all you clothes start falling off of you and you get to go through your closet to get rid of your "big" clothes, it is the best feeling!!!

She is a positive person even though she is facing a difficult time with recent health challenges and that inspires me the most.
My Story
I joined because of the great childcare. We love the nursery and kids gym. My oldest had speed training with Josh upstairs and loved it. My fitness routine is normally 2 classes of Body Pump per week, 1 to 2 RPM classes per week, a few Zumba, pilates, hip hop classes when I can fit them in as well as the machines.
The instructors are the best. Robin was the first one that took time to talk to me and help me. I love her. She is kind and helpful and funny. Close to my heart is Amy. Amy always encourages me and helps me. Becky, Susan, Sean, Edna, Christy, Jane, Bill, Amanda are always kind, helpful and they all are great instructors. Thank you to all the instructors for the food, beverages, cards, noted, hugs and words of encouragement you have provided me and my family. I love you all!

I chose HealthPlus because it has a great family atmosphere. My whole family enjoys spending time there. The people are so nice who work at HealthPlus also.
I am currently doing an 11-week workout plan. It doesn't include a lot of weightlifting, but it has a lot of pull ups, push ups, and elastic band exercises.
I go to the gym because I love working out. I guess it's kind of like eating (Ha!). I just want to do it.

When I first met Susan she was not happy to be seeing me. She had been encouraged to see a trainer by a co-worker in order to alleviate some health issues she had struggled with through the years. She informed me on our first meeting that she did NOT like exercise, though she had never really given it a fair shot. After her first 2 sessions I thought I would never see her again. However, not only is she now coming to see me faithfully every week, she comes on her own at least 2-3 other days a week! Her knee pain, which she had struggled with for years, is now gone. She's lost more than 20lbs in 2 months and she is still losing! She's more vibrant and energetic now than she has been in years, and she's actually ENJOYING exercise! Susan has set realistic goals and has stepped way outside of her comfort zone to achieve them! If more people would give training and exercise consistency a shot, more people would find out exactly how invigorating exercise and healthy habits can actually be! Keep up the GREAT work Susan!
So many people are cheering for you!
My Story
Last July, I was traveling on business when a co-worker noticed how hard it was for me to walk through the airport without becoming short of breath. Extremely overweight, I was also struggling with arthritis in my knees. Simple things like walking down the hall at work were extraordinarily painful. Because it hurt so much to move, I didn't. I walked as little as possible. Going to the grocery store was a major ordeal because by the time I finished my knees were so stiff and sore I could barely bend them.
My co worker told me about Emily Ansick, a personal trainer at Health Plus who had worked with his daughter and encouraged me to give her a call. I was not thrilled about this, but realized that I needed to do something so I met with Emily. I told her I hated exercise, but that I was taking my nieces to New York in December and wanted to be able to walk around the city. I signed up for weekly training sessions and began working with Emily in August. I wish I could say it has been easy, but it is the hardest thing I have ever done. In the beginning it hurt just to breathe after a session with Emily, but slowly I began to notice that I was getting stronger. Emily has put together a plan that is focused on building strength and endurance. Over the months I've noticed that the more Emily pushes me, the less my knees hurt. I still have a long way to go, but I'm committed to a regular exercise plan as a way to lose weight, build strength and improve my overall fitness.
In addition to my weekly session with Emily, I generally come in for an additional one or two sessions a week on cardio and Life Fitness machines and once a week for an hour of aqua walking/jogging. I also worked with Noelle Stewart to develop a healthy nutrition plan. It is a joy to be able to walk without pain and to feel stronger and healthier than I have in many years.

Brad joined HealthPlus in August 2007, after recognizing he was not fit or healthy for his age and wanted to make significant changes in his lifestyle.
My Story
Brad began to gain weight after he graduated from high school and that trend continued through college and marriage until he decided to make personal health and wellness a priority in his life. Brad has been a committed and faithful member of HealthPlus since August 2007. Since joining HealthPlus, Brad has lost 60 pounds and now has a strict fitness maintenance program that he continues to refine. Brad credits his success on a significant change in his diet, especially sugared soft drinks which he has eliminated and made needed changes to his eating habits, mainly eating fruits/vegetables and lean meats. Brad began his fitness journey by increasing his cardiovascular activity with hour-long sessions on the elliptical equipment. He added the Life Fitness weight machines and eventually added in free weights, abdominal and core enhancing exercises. Brad has continued making changes to his workout program that have been beneficial to his overall goals. Brad has been committed and focused on reaching and maintaining his goal of maintaining weight loss and overall fitness.
Because of Brad's commitment and success, his wife joined HealthPlus, through the summer of 2010, lost over 20 pounds, and is becoming committed to exercise and a healthier life style.

About Me

Retired, Ad Sales from the Opelika-Auburn News
Member since April 2007
Member of the Month: December 2010
Nomination by member Megan Gafford Beard:
Doug Gafford not only inspires me because he's my dad - he's also an extremely loyal member of HealthPlus. After spending 4 months at EAMC battling pneumonia, ARDS, and lung cancer (including several weeks on a ventilator), my dad emerged from the hospital weathered by his experience but compelled with a great attitude. He's a walking miracle. The doctors and nurses didn't think he would make it, but he's shown us all by what he's accomplished. When he finished the recommended rehab cycles, he was not content to sit at home and ride out his long-term disability in front of the TV.
Upon hearing about HealthPlus from one of the employees, he promptly joined and has faithfully attended 3 times per week for the last 3 years. He enjoys the physical activity and the fact that it's healthy for his body, but he has truly delighted in the interaction with the people. The trainers, staff, and other members have been so nice and welcoming.
You can always find my dad sitting on the Number 1 Bike (as he calls it) so he can make sure to speak to all the people coming in and out! Not only will he give you a warm "Good Morning!" And, if you ever tell him your name, he'll remember it forever! For the last two years, I have attended with him. It has really been a blessing for us to spend that time together, and the benefits of the entire experience are more than either of us realize. I am proud to recommend my dad, Doug Gafford, for Member of the Month. He truly deserves it and I'm sure all those around him who benefit from his positive attitude and friendly smile would agree.
My Story
I chose HP over other gyms in the area because Mike Moye spoke to Ernie Golden's Pulmonary Rehab class which I attended at EAMC. He outlined the various programs and facilities available to Health Plus members of all ages and abilities. Health Plus appealed to me because it is affiliated with EAMC.
I work out 3 days per week for 30-35 minutes of cardio (bike and treadmill), weight machines (triceps pull down, low back extension, seated dip, etc.)
Having overcome a debilitating illness, I appreciate the increased strength and stamina that workouts give me. The value and the rewards are obvious to me. Due to an impaired ability to walk, it is imperative to maintain these aspects of my physical ability. I also enjoy seeing the staff and other regular members.

I think Jana should be an inspiration to all young mothers at Health Plus. As a mother of 2 young children, Jana has consistently pushed herself (and strollers) to come to Health Plus for regular workouts. She is full of energy and enthusiasm and sets the bar high for herself in everything she does. Jana's positive attitude for fitness is contagious, as seen in Turbo Jam, and her dedication is simply inspirational!
My Story
My husband picked HealthPlus for me. He is a wise man! I have been a member of a big chain gym before and did not enjoy or use it like I should have. HP has been a very good fit for me. I love group fitness classes! I rarely miss Turbo Jam. It is a fun, hard, and Christy just rocks! My workout buddy, Rebecca Parvin, and I have started our own little circuits course on the track too! She keeps me motivated. My main reason for working out is that it makes me a better mom. I get a couple of seconds to myself and then I can be more patient with the kids the rest of the day. I also want to be a good example for them. It is important for them to see me be active.
Words of Wisdom
Someone told me if I would workout for 30 days it would become a habit. That was about 4 years ago! It isn't just a habit, it is a way of life!

Being in shape is an essential part of my job as a scientist with the Forest Service. I joined Health Plus 5 years ago after being a member in 2 other gyms. I came as a guest with another member and was very impressed with the facility and joined shortly thereafter. I work out 3 to 4 times per week, especially on Tuesday and Thursday. I love RPM, Zumba, and Body Pump. Besides the endorphin benefits, the camaraderie of the instructors, staff, and members make workouts something I look forward to.

Dana's commitment toward being at the gym several days a week, before and after work, has inspired me to join HealthPlus. She is very determined and has nothing but positive things to say about HealthPlus and how good she feels since she started working out here.
My Story
Tiffany, one of my coworkers, tried for months to get me to visit HealthPlus and try Body Pump. I was working out at home on my own equipment and couldn't justify paying for a gym. Last year, my office joined HealthPlus and split the cost. It was the best thing my bosses could have done for me. In the beginning, I always had someone to work out with or try a new class with. Now, I have so many new friends at the gym that I always know someone in each class.
I have used the equipment at the gym but I prefer the group fitness classes. I try to fit in at least 5 classes each week. Amanda, Susan, and Holly motivate and challenge me to do my best. My favorite classes are Body Pump, Super Step and RPM. The 5:30 a.m. classes are the best! In the last year and a half I have lost 30 lbs. I know I have a long way to go but I am sure I will reach my goal with all the support and encouragement I get from the wonderful HealthPlus staff.

Nomination submitted by instructor, Susan Byrne:
Nancy currently attends boot camp classes on Mondays and Fridays as well as the circuits classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I first met Nancy when she walked into boot camp this summer stating it was her first time and she wasn't sure how well she would do, but that she was going to try it! Since this summer, Nancy has really improved her overall boot camp performance! Most boot camp classes involve short interval training, as well as running, jumping, pushups, climbing stairs, etc. In fact, almost every class ends with classic team and individual sprints. When Nancy first encountered the sprint portion of class, I admired her effort and determination. No matter how long it took her, she finished each and every sprint at her own pace. Now, Nancy is really pushing herself, and she is getting faster every week. Her strength and stamina have really improved. It's obvious that she is working hard to achieve her own personal and physical goals.
My Story
I joined HP last year when they started the EAMC Exercise Pays Program. It didn't "click" with me until January of this year. Something just told me I better start so I started a little at a time. I started working with a GREAT personal trainer, Elizabeth. I told her what I wanted to accomplish and she is helping reach my goals. I've lost close to 40 pounds so far and I want to lose more.
I love HP because everyone is very supportive. I don't even have an interest in any other gym because this is my "home away from home." When my husband came back from Afghanistan, he was very pleased with the weight I'd lost. Now I go about to the gym 5-7 days a week but I do have off days. I really love to work out. I feel so much better after the work out and it relieves the stress of day.
I go to Boot Camp on Monday and Friday with Susan "who missed her true calling for a real boot camp instructor." Susan is very motivating! I also love the circuits class with Laure and Amanda that is on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the 30 minute Body Pump X-press with Stacey on Wednesdays and Fridays.
I also do the elliptical for at least 30 minutes prior to going to the class and 15 min on the treadmill. I worked my way up to this and I'm still working my way up to something new that I started this month: Team RunAways/Run-Walk class with Emily who I worked with as a personal trainer when Elizabeth was out on maternity leave.
All these people have helped me and they are still helping me to obtain my goals. It all starts with as little as 15 min a day then work your way up. I also feel that women always put everyone else's needs and wants before our own and so we put off things for ourselves. Maybe that why I feel heart disease is on the rise for women. I feel my body was telling me something so I decided to listen and take it serious.

Ronnie has had several orthopedic issues throughout the years and he has never complained once about the workout programs and exercises that I have asked him to do. Keep up the great work. I'm very proud of the two of you!
Our Story
One of my doctors recommended I go to Health Plus when I was recovering from my 2nd back surgery. At the time I was in a wheelchair and walker. Since then I have had a hip replacement also. I work out with cardio equipment and I credit Robert Reams with a lot of my progress. Robert is my personal trainer and I work out with him 3 times a week. I look forward to going to
Health Plus. It has certainly made a difference in my life!
My wife, Rosemary, joined me in working out at HealthPlus. She works on cardio machines and works out with Becky Anders, her personal trainer, on the pilates reformer machine.
We both enjoy the social part of HealthPlus. We see our friends working out there too.
HealthPlus has meant a lot to us. Thank you, HealthPlus!

Bradley consistently works out at HealthPlus. She always seems to enjoy her workouts and gives 110%! She was very determined to get back to her fitness routine after she had her children. She looks great and her work ethic is an inspiration!
My Story
I wanted to join HP because it's clean, friendly staff and lots of diversity!!
I typically do 5 or 6 workouts a week. I come to Body Pump twice a week, and do cardio the other 3 or 4 workouts. I enjoy Susan's RPM class on Wednesdays and Christy's Turbo class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Running, however, is my favorite. I have completed 3 half marathons and look forward to doing many more!
HP was my immediate "go-to" after my first baby was born and I continued to work out all through my second pregnancy and afterwards.
I keep myself motivated because I just love to get a good "burn on." I like to push the envelope and see what I can do next. But my absolute, favorite thing about HP and working out here are the friendships I have developed. The familiar faces and smiles and laughs are priceless. A lot of us have children that we get to see grow from infants into little people and I just love that!! My little boys' best friends are here at HP because Mommy insisted on working out!!

Mike and Gloria Walsh
About Us
Gloria is a retired RN from the Surgical Department at EAMC, and Mike is a retired clinical psychologist from the VA Medical Center and private practice. We are both 65 years old, and have been married 38 years.
Nomination submitted by front desk employee, Blake Ramsey:
Mike and Gloria work out day in and day out. They are here more than I am! Their work ethic is one that should be followed as well. They work extremely hard and may be the most deserving of this honor yet! They have been dedicated members since we opened!
Our Story
We have been serious runners since 1979, running our first of a couple dozen marathons in 1983. Gloria is now a hardcore walker, and Mike is training for a marathon in Memphis in December. We run/walk seven days a week, usually in the morning, and we go to Health Plus six days a week, usually in the early afternoon. We have been members of the original Health Plus, which was located at the hospital in the outpatient building, moving with it to the facility near the Outback restaurant, and thence to the current location. Gloria, then an employee, helped shovel the dirt in the dedication ceremony for the current location. We took a brief hiatus from Auburn in 2007 when we hiked some 1300 miles of the Appalachian Trail, getting as far as New Jersey before Mike broke a rib and contracted Lyme Disease. We then lived in an RV, motoring from California to Key West to Fairbanks, Alaska, and many states in between. We are back in Auburn fulltime, and despite being avid travelers, we have found that the people of Auburn are the finest anywhere.

Ira Weissinger
73 years old
Born in Opelika, and with the exception of 2 years spent in Tuscaloosa and 1 year in Columbus, Ga., I have resided in Lee County.
Taught ninth and tenth grade classes at Baker High School in Columbus for one year, then worked in the Lee County Probate Office for fourteen years, and practiced law in Auburn for 25 years, beginning in 1977.
Retired on March 15, 2002, and I have been retired, full time, since then.
Member of the Month: August 2010
Nomination submitted by member, Eden Scott:
Ira is so consistent with his fitness routine. His dedication is such an inspiration.
My Story
I joined Health Plus in 2000, upon the recommendation of my friend, Dr. James R. Mayfield, an anesthesiologist at EAMC. I choose HealthPlus because the facilities were kept so clean; it was the only gym in which I had ever been a member that, when you entered it, you couldn't tell by the smell that it was a gym.
My routine involves five daily workouts, usually Monday through Friday, but occasionally on Saturday if I miss one of my weekday sessions. Three sessions are devoted to cardiovascular exercise - 30 minutes on the cross-training machine, 19 minutes bicycling, and 18 minutes running on the treadmill. Each cardio session results in the expenditure of nearly 850 calories. Twice weekly, alternating with the cardio sessions, I lift weights and this usually requires nearly two hours.
I have been physically active for my entire life, playing tennis, running, bicycling and lifting weights, because if you are active and burn calories, you can eat almost anything that you want without the concern of excessive weight gain. Also, I believe that an exercise regimen, properly designed and faithfully adhered to, will strengthen our bodies and stave off the debilities associated with the aging process, together with the increasing cost of medical care related to that process.
Words of Wisdom
Our bodies, according to the Holy Scripture, are the temple of God, and thus we are responsible to care for them to the fullest extent that we can and then to rely upon Him to provide that which is needed for our good health and physical well being beyond what we can do.

My Story

Nomination submitted by anonymous member:
When she made up her mind in January she wanted to lose weight..she went at it full force. She took baby steps; changed her eating habits, started eating healthier, then she began walking, and now she's running 4 miles! I am convinced that her weight loss is due to, not only her hard work, but her dedication to staying on a schedule and planning. She is a quiet inspiration not only to me, but to all of us!! Keep it up Chels!
My Story
What is your fitness routine?
I started running at the beginning of April and started off running 1 mile and walking 1 mile. Now almost 4 months later I am running 4 miles four days a week and I try to swim 1.5 miles at least once a week. My boyfriend is trying to get me into lifting weights, so I lift weights once or twice a week. It is not my favorite thing to do, but I know it an important part to a well rounded work out routine. I always try and work out around the time I know I will be here at HealthPlus for work. It is convenient that I work at a health facility!
What keeps you motivated to keep working out consistently?
I have always been an athlete. I was a USS swimmer for 10 years, I played soccer and softball. I also loved to sail and rowed on a crew team for a little while. I never felt like myself when I let myself become inactive and heavy. Now 50lbs later I am running 4 miles and have much more energy, no coffee needed! My co-workers have been my personal cheerleaders and have been great at giving me advice about anything I wanted to know and listening to me whine when I was sore! I could not have done it without y'all!
Words of Wisdom
Make it a competition with yourself. Don't compare yourself to what others are doing. I compete with myself to run longer than I did the day before or to run faster than I did the day before. The competition should be as fierce as the Iron Bowl!

Lauren is a dedicated and loyal member. I see her sweating every day in the gym as well as referring new members!
My Story
I chose Health Plus over other gyms because the staff and trainers care about their members and guests. The indoor pool isn't a bad touch either!
My fitness routine typically depends on what race I'm training for. When I was an undergraduate student at Georgia Tech, I played rugby for about two years. The conditioning/workouts there were very similar to that of Circuits and Boot Camp with some CrossFit thrown in the mix for strength training. I moved to Auburn two years ago to begin graduate school and was introduced to HealthPlus through a friend. For the past couple of months I have been attending RPM, Circuits, and swimming on my own about 4-5 times a week to get ready for my second sprint triathlon. Once that is over, I will be picking up distance running again for my next half marathon in October.
For most of my life I have had a weight problem. It wasn't until about three years ago during a rugby game that I decided something needed to change. I couldn't keep up with the rest of the team and hated the fact that I was slowing everybody down. Therefore, along with working out as much as I could, I decided that I was going to cut out any processed foods, sugar, all red meat, and all alcohol. Within a few months I had dropped about thirty pounds. This quick weight loss was enough to keep me motivated to continue to workout hard. It took about two years, but I've lost over 85 lbs! I went from a size 22 to a size 6.
In order to maintain and hopefully continue to increase my fitness level, I strive to keep participating in more and more races.
Words of Wisdom
Don't be afraid to tryout something new. Working out does not have to be a boring routine and it shouldn't be. Health Plus offers a lot of intense cardio-based class options that can be more effective than any elliptical or treadmill workout.
Bill Crouch
92 years old
My wife and I moved to Auburn 4 years ago to be near my favorite son-in-law, Len Williamson
Retired pharmacist
Operated a family-owned Rexall Drug Store for 60 years in Quincy, FL
Member of H+ since 2007
Member of the Month: July 2010
Nomination submitted by employee, Len Williamson:
Bill is the oldest active male member of H+. He faithfully pushes (drives) his walker on to the fitness floor every day precisely at 2 pm and he works out for exactly 90 minutes. Bill has always been active while enjoying hunting and fishing activates for most of his life. At the age of 70, Bill joined a fitness center in Tallahassee, FL, when he was commuting to a work for a pharmacy there. He had always been blessed with good health, but he felt that he needed to lose some weight and improve the quality of life. He also started a walking routine at the age of 75, walking 5 miles every morning. Over a period of several years, he lost 40 pounds with his exercise and walking program. He has maintained his weight loss. He credits good genes, a healthy diet and consistent exercise for his continued good health. Due to knee and back problems, he is unable to walk far without the aid of his walker but he still manages to walk 2-3 blocks from his house with this walker twice a day.
My Story
I have enjoyed H+ more than any other health club that I have been a member of. It's the best-equipped and managed facility that I have ever used. In addition to the great equipment, the staff (from the front desk to the fitness floor trainers) has always been helpful and accommodating to me. Robert Reams has been especially helpful in assisting me and teaching me how to use the weight equipment. He also gives me helpful suggestions on how to increase and maintain flexibility. I also use the pool to increase my lower body strength and flexibility, but I'm no longer able to get in and out of the pool. It's difficult for me to remember names but so many people speak to me and offer help when I sometimes forget what exercise I should be doing. This is a great facility and I hope I can continue to use it for years to come!

Nomination submitted anonymously:
Rich Bell is always at the gym throughout the week and he works out really hard. When I see him there I tend to work out harder than I would if he weren't because he seems so dedicated to working out and being healthy and it makes me want the same. Over the last few months, I have spoken with Mr. Bell and have discovered that he is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army and is here in Auburn attending Auburn University for a Ph.D. program through the military. He has worked his way to become what he is in the army and intends to use the schooling he is receiving to take it even further. I really admire his motivation and determination. Rich deserves to be the Member of the Month.
My Story
I've been a member of HealthPlus for over a year now. I chose HealthPlus because of the friendly atmosphere, the excellent facilities, and the much-appreciated military discount. I've been a weightlifter since I was a teenager, but I also understand the need for a rigorous cardio program for overall fitness. HealthPlus allows me the opportunity to combine my daily strength training routine with running, biking, swimming, and boxing. My motivation stems not only from the requirements of military service, but also from my desire to stay strong and healthy for many years to come. I look forward to each and every workout, as I feel a great sense of accomplishment after pushing my body to the limit. My long-term fitness goals include running the Army Ten-Miler in Washington, D.C. as often as possible (I've done it twice now) and competing in a triathlon one day. HOOAH!

Nomination submitted by group fitness instructor, Lori Fuller:
Eden's dedication to fitness and consistency is admirable. Even during his busy tax season, Eden still attended Body Pump at Lunch regularly. He pushes himself each week and encourages others to attend H+ as well. He even bought his wife, Terry, some packages of "Groupie Bands" so that she can attend yoga classes. His positive attitude is contagious and his work ethic is encouraging to me and to others!
My Story
We H+ members are a fortunate, common purpose, community of people. We're part of this first-rate sports center full of professionals dedicated to our well-being. I've always had the exercise habit. I came to H+ when KAZ closed several years ago. KAZ was one of the first gyms here in Auburn. I used to meet running friends there and we'd run around the back-campus. I started Body Pump 'pump-at-lunch' a year ago and I build my exercise program around Body Pump now. For me, Body Pump classes are the right combination of group comradeship and extreme exertion.
I'm a mellowing 60-year-old practicing CPA. H+ is right between my office in Towne Center on N. Dean Rd and my home in Cary Woods.
Judith Kohl

Member of the Month - June 2010
Nomination submitted by member Cathy Kohl:
She is a consistent member, even with a broken neck, cancer, aortic stenosis, diabetes, severe anemia and lupus…she still comes faithfully to H+ and trains with Robert Reams. She smiles at everyone she sees and she is an inspiration to all of us! Many of us have no health challenges except for being a little bit overweight!
Comments from Robert Reams, personal trainer:
Judith is a great inspiration. She comes faithfully to HP 5+ days a week. There are some days that she doesn't feel good and she still comes. She has been training with me for 2 + years and she has made great strides. She is able to get out and walk around the lake. She is an amazing woman.
My Story
We joined HP when it opened because it has a bunch of machines and personal trainers who teach us how to use them as well as the pool and steam room. It's also very close to our home.
I come to HP because I feel good when I do. Robert works with me twice a week and for 3 or 4 additional days, I work on the machines for 40-60 minutes. Working out and chatting (or reading in the lobby), energizes me. There more to the HP experience than just exercising.
Words of Wisdom:
Consistency is important!

My husband Regis and I moved to Auburn almost four years ago to be near our daughter and granddaughter
Retired early childhood educator and I still love to work with children
Member since January 2009
Member of the Month - June 2010
Nomination submitted by Gigi Stokes:
I want to nominate my mom and my best friend, Beverly Ledoux, because she has inspired me in so many ways, but mostly for her strength and kindness. For a woman in her 60's and having rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia and diabetes, you would never know she has any of these diseases. She gets up every morning with the motivation and inspiration of life without complaining. She joined HealthPlus at the beginning of the year and she has been religiously lifting weights and doing cardio weekly. You can see wonderful results and she feels so much better. She has been able to reduce some of the medications and has changed to a healthier diet. She was really hesitant to walk on the treadmill due to having a hip replacement and she was concerned about keeping balance. She has now worked her way up to her personal goal: walking with an incline. She is one of a kind who truly enjoys life and she always goes out of her way to help others. She is my inspiration!
My Story
Thank you for the honor to be a member of the month I joined HealthPlus after my hip replacement. I worked out in the pool and really enjoy the classes. The instructors are wonderful! In January of this year I decided to really get serious about a workout because trying to keep up with two six year old grandchildren, I need to be in better shape. I was a little intimated by the gym but everyone has been so kind and patient with me.
I appreciate the encouragement from the trainers and friendliness of other members. Health Plus has been a wonderful place to get healthy while meeting new people and I enjoy working out with my daughter.
Nicole Rankin
Age 27
Married for two years on May 10th!
Occupation: Fisheries Biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Warm Springs, GA
HP Member since 2008
Member of the Month - May 2010
Nomination from member, LoriAnn Summers:
Nicole joined a Team Runaways running group led by Emily early last fall. She has remained dedicated and inspirational! The first day we showed up to run the lake behind Healthplus and most of us couldn't make it more than a few times. This month, Nicole just completed her first HALF MARATHON! Nicole has shown how Healthplus can make a difference in our lives.
My Story
Thank you for recognizing me and the Team Runaways Run/Walk Class! I moved to Auburn, AL from Washington DC two years ago and decided to join HealthPlus because my husband was a member. I have stayed a member at HealthPlus because the staff and equipment are high quality and this gym offers a variety of classes and services.
My fitness routine is running three/four days per week and lifting weights twice per week. Although I really enjoy running now, I have not always been an avid runner. In October 2009, I decided to try the Walk-Run class at HealthPlus. I figured this class would be a good way to re-energize my
After-work gym routine. I was nervous about the first day (pre-assessment) because we needed to complete 2 miles (walking and/or running). I was amazed to complete the 2 miles running and decided one of my class goals would be to complete a 5K in 10 weeks. I was able to exceed this running goal and completed my first 10K in December 2009. Since December, I have continued to participate in the Team Runaways Walk/Run Class with Emily Ansick. Through this class, I have made some amazing running friends. My friends and the Walk/Run Class have helped keep me motivated to work out consistently. I am still amazed at how much I enjoy the class and that I actually love running. I consider myself a "runner" now and completed my first half-marathon (Country Music Half Marathon) in Nashville, TN in April 2010!
Words of Wisdom
If you're looking to change your routine and want to try running, I highly recommend the Run/Walk class with Emily Ansick. She will cater your training to your goals and needs and provides encouragement the entire way.
Sallie Eiland
50 years old
Married to Al for 25 years. We have 3 sons: Will, Drew and Jon.
Homemaker, retired nurse
HP member for 7 years
Nomination from group fitness instructors Lori Fuller and Becky Anders:
Sallie’s positive attitude and commitment to fitness is an inspiration to us and to those around her! She is dedicated to her goals and we admire her desire to succeed. She isn’t afraid to try new things, like Pilates, and the variety that she has in her fitness routine helps keep her motivated and prevents her from getting bored. You would never know that Sallie struggles with MS because she never complains and she always has a bright and welcoming smile on her face!
My Story
I choose HP over other gyms because of the pool and closer supervision. I complete
some aerobic activity 6 out of 7 days a week. I mix it up - swimming, treadmill, walking
in my neighborhood. I pair that with weight lifting twice a week, and most recently I
added Pilates. I stay motivated to keep working out consistently because I want to reach my weight loss goal; but more importantly, I just want to be as healthy as I can be - for myself and my family. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 10 years ago so it's important for me to keep my muscles strengthened and stretched. The encouragement
that I receive from the staff whether in the gym, the group room, or the pool
has given me confidence and a boost when I’ve needed it.
Words of Wisdom
Sticking with it is not always easy - I have to keep my goals in front of me. I set up rewards for myself along the way to stay motivated - like a massage or pedicure. I've also tried some new things that have pushed me a little bit - I've adapted the exercises to make it safe for me. It's been exciting to realize that if I worked at it that I could be successful. Lastly, I've realized the importance of variety. Adding something new really does help prevent burn out.
Samantha & Anderson Johnson

Anderson is a retired Sears Manager and Army Military Retiree
HP members for 7 years
Members of the Month: May 2010
Nomination by front desk employee, O.J. Richardson:
Although we both have been employed by AU for over 25 years, I met the Johnsons here at HealthPlus. They are very consistent with their workouts. After learning that Samantha has lost 24 pounds and Anderson has lost 30 pounds through the Scale Back Alabama program, they have inspired me to participate next year.
Our Story
We are honored to be recognized for work so rewarding!!
We joined HP because we like the variety and quality of the equipment available,
also the staff is AU-some!!!! Our fitness routines include coming to HP 3 to 5 days a week (3 days cardiovascular and 2 days weights.)
In January 2010, Anderson was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
We can verify that exercise and proper diet is the “best medicine!!”
After just 2 months, Anderson’s blood sugar was perfect and he was taken off all medicines!!!
Staying healthy keeps us motivated!!
I lost 24 pounds on Scale Back Alabama, from January to April 2010 and Anderson has lost 30 pounds since January.
After attending the Diabetes classes, we changed what we ate, decreased our serving sizes and we
reduced the amount of times we eat out.
We also increased our exercising days, when time permits.
It works, and we are pleased with results to date!!!

She has improved herself in all facets of mobility, range of motion, balance and significantly, duration. She is truly a blessing to know and work out with!
My Story
It’s imperative that my husband takes water exercise classes at least 3 times a week. The "hidden" advantage is that I get to come with him, have fun and enjoy the great program too! At my age, I can need all the benefits of exercise that I can get! After 2 years at HP, I can see vast improvement in every area. I really appreciate Clay’s nominating me for this honor. He is an excellent instructor and he makes the members of our class feel like family.
Words of Wisdom
Water classes are vital for our agility and balance.
I urge ALL to join us in the pool for FUN and FITNESS!
Ted Worthington
71 years old
Retired
Member since August 2000
Member of the Month: March 2010
Nomination from wife, Jane Worthington:
In 1989 Ted suffered a heart attack. His doctor told him that if he wanted to be able to prolong his life he should do two things: eat a heart healthy diet and exercise regularly. After the heart attack, he was also diagnosed with Dysautonomia, a disease that affects the blood pressure. Even though he has frequent bouts with low blood pressure (he has an implanted pace maker) he still makes every effort to be there to do his exercise, every day of the week. Some days, due to his problems, he has to leave and not finish ...but his record there will tell you how well he does even though it might be very hard for him to be there on any given day. In 1993, he had open heart surgery and his doctor tells him that the grafts still look good and we contribute that to his hard work there at HealthPlus.
My Story
I joined HP because my wife is an EAMC employee and I like the variety and quantity of equipment available, plus the staff is great. My fitness routine is: 1 ½ hours day, six days a week of cardiovascular and weights 3 to 4 times a week. My doctor told me that exercise is the best medicine he can prescribe. I have been exercising for 20 years, it helps me to keep my weight down (which is very important) and I am so accustomed to doing it each day that I do feel better when I exercise.

We have one son, Jeremy, who is a percussion instructor/assistant band director at Weslaco High School (TX)
Graduated from Auburn in 1978 – WAR EAGLE!!!
Member of the Month - March 2010
Nomination from HealthPlus employee, Laura Futrell:
Betsy jumped right in at HP and made working out a habit. Now she is a walking advertisement for HP.
Her enthusiasm is contagious!
My Story
I have been a member of HP since 2002. I chose HP over other gyms because it had so much more to offer. In 2002 it was relatively new so my husband and I came and checked it out. I liked the dressing rooms, the amenities and the friendliness of the staff. I joined HP so I could work out and hopefully lose some weight. I wasn’t very motivated. I just swam, did weights and the treadmill. In 2003, I was diagnosed with Diabetes. I was put on a diabetic diet and increased my exercising using the treadmill, the bike, the cross trainer and weights. I lost about 30 lbs. Then I tore my Achilles tendon which slowed me down quite a bit. I came sporadically. 2½ years ago, I joined Weight Watchers through Auburn City Schools. I increased my workouts to almost every other day but was still only doing the machines and weights. I lost almost 90 lbs and then hit a plateau. I was getting bored with my workouts and unmotivated.
One Sunday last August, I heard an announcement to join Body Pump. I decided what the heck, I would try it. Well that is all it took. I was hooked. Susan was fantastic. I never thought that it would be so much fun. Susan motivated me and kept encouraging me. I got interested in more classes so I started doing RPM with Amanda. I loved her RPM and the music! After a few months, Susan encouraged me to try Boot Camp. I am not a runner, and I was worried it would be too hard. I mean, Boot Camp is what they do in the military isn’t it? But, I came to one of her classes. It was great. I never worked so hard in my life but I never felt so good either. Susan taught me to go at my own pace. She helped me get over my fear of doing the unknown. She encouraged me and kept making me feel good about what I was doing. I was getting addicted to working out. I added the Circuits class with Amanda and she showed me another fun way to work out. Getting to know other people and making new friends is a big bonus for participating in the classes. With some encouragement from Susan, I started taking her Step class and I am hooked on that now as well. A fellow member, Annette Killingsworth, as well as Susan and Laura Futrell kept telling me I needed to try Turbo Jam. I was hesitant, I didn’t box and that sounded like a boxing class to me. But I went to Christy’s Turbo Jam class, boy was I wrong, it was fantastic! I love coming to Health Plus, it is my home away from home now. My doctor has decreased all my medications and has said that I may be off most of them by this summer. If you would have told me a year ago that I would enjoy working out, I would have laughed in your face. But now I can’t wait for school to be over so I can get to the gym.
Thank you to Susan, Amanda, Laura, Laure and everyone else at HealthPlus for helping me to better my life.
Words of Wisdom
I always tell my students that they can because they think they can. Never be afraid to try anything and if you do your best you will succeed. Listen to those who know what they are teaching you and you will be successful. I feel that way about working out. If I think I can do it I can.

Member of the Month - March 2010
Nomination by group fitness instructor, Emily Ansick:
I met Dave during his 2nd fitness appointment in Spring 2009. He was new to exercising and he was motivated to start by his upcoming 60th birthday. Since then, Dave has completely changed his lifestyle. He comes in here 6 days a week and stays for 1-2 hours each day. He’s always smiling and overly willing to work hard. I now train him and I’m amazed that he gives every exercise 110%. Since last spring, Dave has gone from 23% body fat to 9%, he’s lost 11 pounds, his blood pressure has decreased significantly and his heart rate has gone down 20 beats per minute. This guy deserves credit for his hard work and quest for excellence.
Keep up the motivation Dave. You’re an inspiration to us all!
My Story
I joined Health Plus in January 2009. I was made to feel at ease by the relaxed surroundings.
Personal trainer, Blake Butcher, was my first personal contact. His quiet demeanor made all the difference in convincing me that I had found the right place to turn my health around.
Then I was introduced to personal trainer, Emily Ansick! Her ability has put me where I am today. The stretching sessions helped with my posture and the PT sessions showed that building a strong core was still a possibility.
And I can't leave out Robin Kurtz’s dedication to Body Pump.
She sets a strong pace and makes that hour fly by.
Thank you HealthPlus!

Nomination by group fitness instructor, Susan :
Almost 2 years ago, I persuaded Heather to try a cycling class. She reluctantly tried it and she decided she didn’t like it. I kept asking her to come back over the next year to try it again. I told her that cycling was going to give her the best cardio workout for her limited time. When RPM launched in February 2009, she decided to try it again. This time, she stuck with it and now she rides 2-3 times a week. She has lost a considerable amount of weight that she had gained by having 3 kids in 6 years. I proud of her hard work and of her effort. You GO GIRL!
My Story
I joined HP in 2007, and it took me a while to get into a consistent fitness routine. Managing my time while raising 3 young children is difficult, and I can always think of other chores that need to be done. After I made the decision to make some time for myself, I began to feel better and want to come to the gym. Still have a long way until I reach my goal, but I'm getting closer.
My fitness routine is to come to the gym in the mornings after I get the kids to school. I enjoy Christy's Turbo Jam, she keeps me motivated and it is so much fun! I also take RPM about 3 times a week but it took me a while to "enjoy" these classes. Thanks to Susan and Amy Barron keeping me motivated, I have gotten in better shape and like the results I’ve seen after taking RPM.
When the classes do not fit into my schedule I have enjoyed using the treadmill and even running some, which is something I have never done before!
I like that HP has a huge variety of classes that I feel comfortable doing. I can challenge myself with new classes as I get ready. I enjoy spending time with my friends, which keeps me motivated.

Age 68 - This means that I was born shortly after the earth started to cool!
Occupation: Retired Professor of Microbiology and former Chair of Biological Sciences, Auburn University.
I joined Health Plus when it was located in a temporary building across from Outback Steak House. I then moved with it to its present location, hence, I have been a member for more than 10 years.
Member of the Month - March 2010
Nomination submitted by trainer, Brett Tyson:
As a trainer at HP, you get to know people fairly well. Al is one of these members that has dedicated himself to staying in shape. He works very hard at strength and cardiovascular training. He is always friendly and has something to say to get a laugh out of you. I want to be as positive and friendly as Al is to people he comes in contact with.
My Story
I have always been involved in some form of exercise: biking and tennis when I was younger; running until I had injuries to my knees and had to retire from that activity; exercising on a Nordic track until I wore out the clutch wheel and could not obtain replacement parts; and finally strength training which I started with a small weight set in my home. My wife was an EAMC employee and when HealthPlus opened, I joined. I like the mix of individuals who come to Health Plus, both younger and older members which one does not find at other gyms. I have established a number of friendships at the gym and I look forward to seeing my buddies when I come to the gym.
I try to work out 5 days a week. I do cardio each of the days for approximately 60 minutes. I alternate upper body and lower body strength exercises 4 days a week. This particular routine helps me maintain my weight and as Dr. Jim Meadows states, “coming to the gym is better than any handful of pills he could prescribe.” The truth of the matter is that I am an addict to exercise. I have made it part of my daily routine just as eating and sleeping are essential to my daily existence. I think that one will find that most people who are committed to exercise have this approach. In essence, one does not feel good if one does not work out.

Member of the Month - February 2010
My Story
I joined HP in 2008, and I ound it very difficult to manage my time with school and work, and all the obligations that come with the two. Working out was not at the top of my priority list, and it started to become obvious. I am a MCT in the Emergency Department, and it requires a lot of standing and walking. Many of the shifts I work are 12 hour shifts, and they were very tiring and becoming quit difficult. I knew I was out of shape and needed to fix it.
I recently joined Weight Watchers in the 1st of January and decided to rejoin HealthPlus right after. I have really learned how to manage my time between working 30 hours a week, 15 hours of class, and working out. Working out has now become a big part of my day to day routine and is less of an obligation. I have found things that I absolutely love, and actually enjoy doing.
My favorite classes are Zumba, Body Pump, and Turbo Jam. On days when my schedule does not allow time for one of the classes, I enjoy running (a new activity for me). I’ve even ventured into the pool, and found that I love swimming laps. I continue to try new machines and classes and love all the variety!
I am so thankful that there are fun, enjoyable classes for people of every level and age. They are there for you when you first start out, and allow you to increase your own intensity at your own rate. HealthPlus is amazing! The people are absolutely wonderful, the facilities are so clean, and the location is very convenient.

He is very committed to working out here every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He actually put off his heart surgery because they didn’t want to do it on one of his workout days. After he had his stint put in, he was back working out the next day. He doesn’t feel right (in his mind) if he misses a workout here!
My Story
My health conscious wife with a nursing background joined HP in 1999. She and our daughters made it their business to get me to join in 1999 -- just as they got me to give up smoking years earlier.
The EAMC community involvement made HealthPlus an obvious choice.
We started exercising before the present comprehensive HealthPlus facilities existed. Walking and cycling with classical music on CD's puts exercise on another level of experience. Being able to read the papers makes Mon, Wed and Fri visits the thing to do. There are also fellow exercisers to keep track of. One also has to go to keep up with what is new, such as finger-identification check in. One can even try to improve a good thing by encouraging use of classical music, finding out why good newspapers disappear or ordinary ones get disorganized or even torn.
There are more reasons to go to Health Plus than for exercise

My Story
I am a walking miracle! I was on a deck that collapsed and fell on a BBQ grill on Valentines Day 1991. I broke my hip. As a result, I had a metal plate in my leg, four screws and a pin in my hip. I had to learn how to walk all over again. I was teaching at Ole Miss. I went back to teaching using a wheel chair, then a walker. I graduated to crutches, a fashionable four prong cane and then a one prong cane. I endured a year of physical therapy. Then a year later I had a second hip operation to remove all the hardware. I had to learn how to walk again using the same routine: wheel chair, walker, crutches, canes and lots of PT. As part of my continued physical therapy I work out about 5 days a week. My fitness routine includes Turbo Jam, Zumba, Body Pump, Pilates and Yoga. I love the group classes. Christy really motivates me to worker harder and "shimee" while burning lots of calories. Becky has taught me how to strengthen my abs and improve my posture during personal Pilates training. Wow! The Pilates reformer really flattens your abs like no other machine.
Blake has taught me how to stretch my hip properly during flexibility and strength personal training. I recommend stretching with Blake before you go to a group class like Turbo Jam or Zumba. Zumba helps me burn 100's of calories and learn the latest dances like Salsa, Merengue, Hip Hop & Disco. I love to go to Amy’s yoga class to get a great stretch and toning. Robin does a great job at motivating me to lift weights in Body Pump. Lori and Susan are also great Body Pump instructors that push me to lift more weight and increase my endurance. I still cannot believe that I can do lunges with a bar and weights. Hoorah! I've come a long way from being in a wheel chair to pumping iron in Body Pump. Stacey and Christy make Turbo Jam so much fun. I'm exhausted but feel great after an hour of Turbo Jam. It has really made me stronger. Sean, Christy & Becky teaching Zumba are a powerful trio. Wow! The energy in the room is amazing with this dancing trio. We have a great time. The hour passes by so quickly. The inches have also melted away while we join the dance party at Zumba. These fun classes and our awesome instructors keep me motivated to work out consistently. Our instructors are well trained, knowledgeable and friendly. They‘re the reason why I chose HP over other gyms.

Mr. Will and Mrs. Kate have contagious smiles that just make you want to smile too! Their gentle spirits and outgoing personalities are inspiring. They’re committed to their daily fitness routine. They’ve made the life-changing decision to make wellness a priority, as individuals and as a couple. The results are obvious when you see how “young” they are, physically and mentally. Their commitment inspires so many of us to remain consistent in our wellness journey as well. They’re a testimony to the importance of living your life to its fullest and to making fitness a top priority! I smile when I see them holding hands as they walk around the lake or track every day. It’s sweet to see their eyes still twinkle when they talk about each other, their marriage and family. How refreshing to see a couple who still enjoy each other’s company after 60 years of marriage and who truly love exercising together!
Their Story
We married 60 years ago and started raising 5 kids. After the kids left home, Kat went back to school to get an accounting degree and worked as a CPA. Will spent his time designing air conditioning systems for textile mills. Will spent three years in the Army Air Force during WWII ending up as a P-51 fighter pilot in Europe, then stayed in the reserves for a total of 28 years.
About six years ago, Will had heart bypass surgery and after recovery we joined the HealthPlus Fitness Center to get his health built back up. We try to work out three times a week and every day we also try to get walking excerside either inside or around the lake. We sold our house and moved to the Camellia retirement place so that we could be close by the HealthPlus Fitness Center andall it's benefits. The center has outstanding equipment but best of all is the fine group of team members who can help us with our use of the equipment.

Nomination from personal trainer, Brett Tyson:
She is always pushing herself on strength training and cardio training. She is a "running machine" and she inspires me to go running again!
My Story
Once upon a time… Just kidding. I enjoy running. I like pretty much everything about it. It’s mine and something I love to share. When my girls were little, I would give them a few hours of playtime at daycare or swap childcare time with friends to get out and run (and also to lift weights at the gym). We were in Germany and there was many a winter day when I would get back with "icy" dreadlocks. I ran my first half marathon chatting with everyone I ran by. I had no idea that we weren’t supposed to socialize while racing! When we got back to the States, I ran for a couple of years and like many folks, I started to let my exercise regime slide, dropping from regular 8-mile runs to a couple of miles maybe a couple of times a week, if I was lucky. During that time I found myself gravitating toward group fitness classes & free weights. A couple years ago, I decided that I really needed to get back into running. Maybe it was finding myself staring down the latter half of my 30’s that got my attention!
Last January, I ran my second half marathon. Cold, hungry, and a bit crazed afterwards, my husband conned me into adopting our dog, Possum (but that’s another story!). This summer, I ran the Auburn 5k series. What fun! I tried to "share" that experience with my husband but he wasn’t buying it! The great thing about running is all you need is a good pair of shoes and you’re set. You can run down the road, you can run around the pond, you can run forever on the treadmill. The great thing about HealthPlus is that if I get up late on my day off and it’s too hot, or too wet outside, I can head to HealthPlus, hop on the treadmill, plug in my earphones in & go! When I get done, I can take a hot shower & not worry about washing the towels as I go on my merry way.
I really enjoy HealthPlus and consider it a great benefit as an EAMC employee. I always see someone I know. Tracking my cardio workouts online through Fitlinxx is super easy. Brett has been an encouragement. Jumping off the treadmill today after finishing a 21-mile run in prep for my first full marathon, I felt good. Now, if I’d only planned ahead, I could have gotten a massage on my way out…hmm…

Jim’s nomination from an anonymous member:
He is here every day and is always cheerful. Jim is very helpful with the knowledge of weights. He has seen me do exercises incorrectly and he has kindly shown me how to do them correctly. He also kicks me in a positive way to keep coming and never lose faith or give up. Endure to the end is what he says. I’m happy to have his encouragement and I’m beginning to enjoy being here
My Story
I joined Health Plus the first year of operation. I stopped by the trailer when the facility was under construction and asked Barry when it would be open.
He said "if I tell you, I’d have to kill you...top secret stuff!"
I had been working out at KAZ Fitness until they closed. I wanted a full service gym/sports club and HP was the best in the county or maybe east Alabama.
My fitness routine seems to be:
1. Eat anything I want then work it off.
2. Work out at least three days per week with free weights plus 30 min. on a cross trainer.
3. I try to make the Monday, Wednesday, Friday Pilates classes.
Working out is kind of like a good savings program…pay yourself first.

Ron is the most focused person I’ve ever met. Once he made up his mind to lose weight, he made it happen. He won’t tell anyone how much weight he has lost, but suffice it to say, it’s a significant amount. Last August, he visited some childhood friends. One of them made a comment about his weight. That comment gave him the determination to lose the weight and get healthy once and for all! He changed his eating habits and revamped his exercise program with help from the HP staff. He looks great and seems to feel great as well.

Hub’s nomination by instructor, Becky Anders:
Hub is faithful to his exercise routine and he was willing to try something new: Body Pump! Now, he comes to Body Pump 4-5 days a week! He is always encouraging and helpful to the instructors and other members.
My Story
I began jogging in the early 1960s. Forty years later, after wearing my body out and trying to save my heart, Dr. Jim Mathews, recommended that I substitute cross training activities for the jogging which would reduce the stress on my joints. In order to implement the cross training program, I joined HealthPlus in the fall of 2000. I chose HealthPlus primarily for its credibility (affiliation with EAMC) as well as the location, facilities, programs, diversity (seniors are welcome!) and the STAFF!
My initial exercise program consisted of 40-45 minutes of cardio, five days a week and 20-30 minutes of strength training with high reps and light weights, three days a week. Approximately six weeks ago, I included Body Pump as part of my program based on the recommendation of instructor, Becky Anders. I highly recommend Body Pump for both men and women
(men, leave your pride at the door!)
Thanks Becky, Robin and Susan for your patience and help in making Body Pump a rewarding experience.

Linda’s nomination submitted by her daughter, Meridith:
My mom is very faithful in her attendance and knows everyone at the gym. She encourages a lot of people to come to HealthPlus!
My Story
My motivator for coming to the gym is my husband, who is now responsible for our attendance at the 5:30 a.m. group fitness classes. He enjoys it, while I simply want to avoid buying a bigger size of clothing. Seriously, I try to be a good role model for my daughters and I want to stay healthy and avoid needing to take any kind of medicine on a regular basis. Few things please me more than working out with my family.
During the past two years, I have been motivated by several instructors including Laure, Patrick, and Texas Lindsey in the Circuits class, Torie in Boot Camp, and now Power Yoga and Kick Boxing along with Jess, Amanda, and Sean in Body Pump.
Finally, working out at HealthPlus has provided me with a new set of friends and acquaintances who encourage and motivate me to attend class and work hard. It is also a treat to exercise with folks of all ages, including students and members of OLLI at Auburn.

Becky’s Nomination submitted by instructor, Christy Coleman:
Becky has the most positive attitude about exercise following a hip replacement. Becky came back to HealthPlus and has progressed from walking with crutches to independent walking. She is always cheerful and encouraging to others as well. I love having her in my Turbo Jam class. She modifies the moves to fit her abilities and still has fun!
My Story
I have always played sports, and have been a keen supporter of women in sports. It is a generational thing – revolting against the old days when women wore white gloves, and did not sweat! One can only imagine my disbelief, when after a fall on the tennis court, I was told that my hip disease would eventually require total hip replacement.
Being a dramatic sort, all I could think of was the possible fate that my tennis game and exercise life were both over. I had grown accustomed to the rush of endorphins; I liked to score when I hit a ball, and this was not happening to me!
The immediate news to me that day was gloomy, and the future surgical complication unforeseen, but that is really when my life’s lesson on goodness, and the possibilities yet to be, were born. HealthPlus and the EAMC health care family were ambassadors of the possible, and an important link to why I have continued to persevere in my fitness and wellness goals. One year after surgery (a brand new hip) and 18 pounds lighter (that new hip weights 3 pounds) , I am still working out with on a regular basis, setting continuing weight loss and fitness goals. I still have not given up on tennis – but I am learning how to play "senior style!"
The gift of personal encouragement we give to each other in the face of illness or physical challenge is priceless. I am so grateful to Christy and Susan who offered kind words and fitness know-how through their classes and one on one feedback. I am so grateful to Bill and Jane whose humor on the stationary bike made me see that it could be done. I am also grateful to everyone at Rehab Works, especially Justin and Andrea Sandal and to Dr. Win Lyle and his staff at East Alabama Sports Medicine. All of their collective skills, and gifts made a profound difference in my road to recovery and wellness. See you on the tennis courts!

Linda is always working out and she is so active. If she is not at the gym, she is at home working out. She is always wanting to help me lose weight and encouraging me that I can do it! She even bought me a 3-month membership!
My Story
Exercise has always been a part of my life. Over the years, I have belonged to gyms in Lee County that many people have never heard of. For a long time I was a member of Kaz’s Fitness Center. At one time the AU strength coach was my personal trainer. For a number of years my exercise regime was running. I have run 8 marathons – my favorites are NY, Boston, Chicago & LA. I’ve also run several half-marathons – my favorites are NY and LV.
In early 2004 I was diagnosed with osteoporosis. I was not young, but I was too young to have bones in this weak of a condition. My doctors were surprised given the amount of exercise I had always done. But I had been somewhat lax over the past couple years and especially sporadic with the weight training. I have learned a lot about osteoporosis over the past 6 years and one thing is the importance of weight bearing exercise and weight lifting. I tried getting in a routine in my home gym, but was quickly bored.
One day I went into HealthPlus to look around and before I left, I was a member. I joined HealthPlus in May of 2004. Health Plus gets an A+ across the board from me. It motivates me when I look around and see something for everyone – all ages, all sizes, all levels of fitness and health. The instructors and trainers – Robin, Susan, Christy, Becky, Robert, Len - are all so enthusiastic and supportive. It is reassuring to me that I feel all the personnel are properly trained and they understand my (and others) special health issues – like my osteoporosis, my cervical disc fusion, and from time to time other issues. The equipment is top of the line and the facility is always clean. There is such a mix of group classes that one can attend everyday and never get bored.
I am definitely a morning person, so I have to go workout before noon or I will never make it. I mostly go to the group classes and do weights. But sometimes when I get off schedule for one reason or another, I get on the treadmill and plug in my headphones and watch Cash Cab on TV. I like the cycling classes. I am trying to learn Zumba and Turbo Jam. I have also been to Kellie for massages (she gives a great massage).
I’ve also had a metabolic testing with Noelle – another very positive experience.
I have recruited 7 of my family and several friends to become HealthPlus members. I feel a personal pride in “My Club.” I guess that says I think HealthPlus is great!

My Story
I am currently rehabbing my Achilles tendons; and swimming is the only intense cardiovascular exercise I can do until I heal. I swim laps for about 40 minutes every day, and do heal drops on the steps of the pool to strengthen my Achilles tendons. I motivate myself. Health and fitness have always been a big part of my life. I am a very active person and can’t wait until I am 100% again so I can resume all of my fitness activities. I have met many wonderful people at HealthPlus and look forward to the time I spend here each day.

Nomination submitted by instructor, Lori Fuller:
Dick is such an inspiration! He always has such a positive attitude and he is so pleasant to be around. His dedication to the practice of yoga is admirable and the results are obvious when you watch him practice!
I hope I can be as flexible and healthy as Dick is when I’m his age.
My Story
Shortly after my retirement in 1995, my children observed that I was "slumping over" more than usual, probably from sitting too much at my desk. "Your hip flexors are weak," they told me, suggesting that those muscles should be flexed and toned. And so it was that I began the practice of yoga, not only to strengthen my hip flexors but all the muscles of my body, to maintain the range of motion of my joints, and to preserve my sense of balance.
When the downtown gym closed, I joined HealthPlus, continuing with yoga, but also participating in strength and cardio activities, to augment my regular exercise in dancing and yard work. Yoga (or "yoke") slows down the aging process, lengthens and strengthens the muscles of the body, and preserves the sense of balance, all of which deteriorate with age. But even more, yoga promotes deep breathing.
Standing near the center of the group activity room, you look out the high windows to the north and see the wind blowing in the trees—then your breath and the wind work in rhythm together, like a prayer, as though your breath and the breath of God are one.
The music is soft and the voice of the instructor gentle, though the movements are sometimes demanding. The instructions, the music, the movement, the pauses and silence all come together to create an aura of prayer, a wordless prayer, given up by the whole body. Then you remember the words of St. Paul, which are echoed by all the world’s great religions: The body is the Temple of God.
Leaving the gym, going out into the bright sunlight, we are better people for having come to this place, physically, mentally, spiritually. Thank you, HealthPlus!

Currently a second year pharmacy student at the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn
Engaged and getting married on June 12, 2010!
Nomination submitted by staff member, Deborah Stinson:
Katie’s dedication and commitment to reaching her goals has indeed inspired me.
She always comes into the gym with a smile and we can all see the transformation which is an encouragement to others.
My Story
In high school, I was always really active and played all kinds of sports. I moved to Auburn for college in 2005, and I found that I really missed pushing myself through exercise. I worked out at the Student Activities Center on campus for about a year and a half, and it was great, but I was looking for more from a gym. A friend of mine suggested that I try HealthPlus, and I loved it!
The hard working staff and great equipment easily make it the best gym in the Auburn/Opelika area.
Last year, I lived with a HealthPlus instructor, Jessica Wallace, and her motivation encouraged me to exercise more. If you haven’t tried her Body Pump class—you should! Since starting pharmacy school, exercise has definitely been my source of stress relief. Running, lifting weights, and getting on the elliptical help me keep my sanity after long days and nights of studying.

Married to Jason Nelson for 7 years
Have no children, but have a dog and cat that think they are!
Graduated from Auburn University in MIS in 2002
Have worked for Health Information Designs for almost 7 years
Been an off and on HP member since 2005
Nomination submitted by instructor, Michele Hunter:
Andrea is a very motivated person! She has lost a lot of weight, which is an inspiration in itself, but she also continues to challenge herself. She participates in the group fitness classes, sometimes coming to BodyPump in the morning and then a cardio class in the afternoon. Andrea has run in several local races and recently completed a triathlon. Andrea is an inspiration to me because of her commitment to fitness and her determination to strive to the next level!
My Story
My main motivation to start exercising was to lose weight. I was tired of being overweight and tired all the time. To my surprise, I found an "inner athlete" that I never knew was there. I truly love exercising and working out. I have lost 45 pounds!
My first goal was to run a 5K. I participated in a few races and wanted to challenge myself even more. I decided I wanted to do a triathlon, so I signed up for a sprint distance for my first race. Unfortunately, I had no swimming experience. I could swim, just not very well. I signed up for the "Swim For Fitness" class and it has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Ann is amazing and I wouldn’t have made it without her.
I worked on my own and also took RPM with Michele and Body Pump with Holly, Jess, and Amanda to prepare for the race. I also take Step classes with Susan to keep things fun. It is one of my favorites!
I also need to give credit to trainer, Laure Williams, for giving me the idea to try a triathlon. She was always available to answer any of my questions, even the stupid ones, and encouraged me the entire time.
My current routine hasn’t changed much from my training schedule. Setting goals has kept me motivated to keep working out and improving. I picked HealthPlus over other gyms because of the pool. I’m very glad I did because along with the pool I’ve gained a great support group and wonderful instructors that keep me coming back for more.
Tonya Haynes
35 years old – Auburn native
HP Member since 2006
I joined HP because a friend of mine is a member and I liked the no-pressure, family-style atmosphere
Works at Auburn Public Library
Nomination from Tonya’s mother, Twynette :
I have watched my daughter struggle with losing weight since her daughter was born almost 4 years ago. For a very long time, even though she was working out and trying to watch what she ate, the weight just would not come off. She got discouraged but kept trying. That really impressed me!! I think a lot of people would have given up, but she didn't. Over the past year, she has lost about 50 pounds and is so much stronger and healthier. I'm very proud of her. She was always beautiful inside but now she is beautiful outside too.
My Story
I really want to take this opportunity to thank all the trainers and group fitness teachers that have helped me go from almost 200 lbs to reaching my goal of 145 pounds, (3 to go!) I love all the staff who take care of my daughter and I! Thanks to O. J. who is wonderful and to the other desk staff. Thanks also to all the nursery workers that my daughter loves to see every time she gets the chance! HealthPlus ROCKS!
Robin was my first step teacher and she also taught a body toning class that I loved! She is fun and motivational with a hard workout that you are always sore from later. Susan’s step class is fun and challenging. Susan pushes me to really work hard in Body Pump too!
I can't say enough about Amy! She helped me "step up" my workout and encouraged me to see that I am stronger than I ever thought! Amy encouraged me to try more than just step aerobics to make changes to my body. Amy also taught a circuit training class that I never thought I could survive, but I went since she was my friend and it got easier and easier!
Torie has been a great helper for me as well! I finally got "brave" and started taking Boot Camp. Torie kills me and motivates me at the same time each week. Lindsay showed me how to get more from my workout in the circuits class. I also met my friends Linda Shook and Mitzi Winters in that class and they always cut up and made the class fun. Friends motivate me so much!
Patrick is also great for making the circuits class challenging and he kills us in the 15 minute abs class afterward! He has great body toning suggestions and helps with any questions.
Michele teaches great step, kickboxing and Body Pump classes. She makes the class fun and has a ton of energy to motivate! I loved Holly’s interval class! She helped me do more than I ever thought I could with pull ups for my upper body as well as learning how to really work my heart to keep it strong. This class has recently been taken over by Alicia and she is awesome too! She does a good job at making each class different and makes us work as hard as possible to get results each week. I love it!

I recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of my 39th birthday
Married to Roberta for 38 years
Occupation: Professor Emeritus of Finance, AU
Nomination submitted by member Helga Wilmoth:
John is at the gym every day working out with weights or at a Pilates class, despite his physical challenges. He is always smiling and his wife is always with him. He is an inspiration to all of us who can walk without difficulty!
My Story
I joined Health Plus in the summer of 2000, when they were located behind Outback. Roberta talked me into it – my first thought had been that I could run “Snake Hill” on campus for free.
I’m glad I joined. Five years later, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and my fitness needs began to change. My workouts now feature Pilates, stationary bicycling, and lifting light weights.
My goal is simple: stay out of a wheelchair.
I am convinced that working out on a regular basis has been a significant factor in doing that.
We chose HealthPlus over other fitness centers because the others seem to cater to 30-somethings whose goal is to leap tall buildings in a single bound!
HealthPlus has made room for those of us who have suffered the "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune!" I hope they continue to do so. Another attraction at HealthPlus is the other members. I enjoy socializing with former colleagues and people I would never have met otherwise. A major 'plus' at Health Plus is the staff. All are friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. If you have a question about the best way to meet your fitness needs, they will help.

Nancy always, always has a smile. She is determined and has a strong will to improve herself emotionally and physically, extensively in the pool. She is funny and a pleasure to be around.
Nancy is not afraid and has come a long way to be where she is. (She also has beautiful hair!)
My Story
Exercise has always played a key role in my life.
Ever since my diagnosis of MS (multiple sclerosis) in 2003, my exercise plan has increased and focused toward improving balance, strength, and coordination. MS has proven to be a great motivator. If indeed, I plan to have a good day, exercise is priority for me. I suffer a great deal of stiffness (spasticity) on my left side (hip and leg) and stretching helps tremendously.
HealthPlus offers every program that meets my needs at this time.
My fitness routine begins at 5:30 am on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays with the Body Pump class.
Following Body Pump, I get in the pool for at least one hour and participate in the Aqua Aerobics class and/or work on my swimming skills. I am learning to swim, thanks to one of my therapists, Lane Stewart. I have takenZumba and I plan to try cycling. I am improving on all of my skills and I am enjoying my workouts.
HealthPlus has been a special place for me to see many of my co-workers and exercise in a clean and relaxed environment. My plans are to lose about 20 pounds, the only hindrance is that I LOVE to eat!!!!
A love for God helps me to keep a good attitude toward life and living.
I love ME! I want to be the best ME that I can be. However, I am not a quitter!

Retired professor of microbiology for 32 years

Nomination submitted by an HealthPlus employee:
I’m impressed that Gerald took control of his health and he has made significant lifestyle changes that have greatly improved his life!
My Story
I sort of just wandered in to HealthPlus one day and I liked what I saw.
My routine varies because first and foremost, I fish, then I exercise!!
Usually, I exercise 3-4 days a week. I work out on 8 strength machines. I have increased the weight on each machine as well as the repetitions. I also increased the number of sets I do on the abs machine. I do at least 30 minutes on the treadmill set at 15% incline and 3.0 speed (450 calories per 30 minutes)
I do 30 minutes also on the exercise bike, keeping the rpms in the 80s and the load 3 to 4 (155 calories per 30 minutes). I started walking and jogging last week to end my workouts (I had not run in 25 or 30 years). I have been doing 10 to 14 laps (half and half). My goal is to get up over a mile.
I have lost 15 pounds and my doctor has taken me off glucophage, which I had been taking for 14 years ever since I was diagnosed with diabetes. My blood pressure has also dropped since I started exercising.
I keep motivated to exercise because I don’t want to gain the weight back and I don’t want to have to take glucophage again. The other thing that keeps me motivated is exercising makes me feel good and makes me look forward to my time on the lakes for some more fishing.

Nomination submitted by instructor, Clay Davies:
Mattie is consistent and very creative in creating her own workouts. She loves to try different things and she is a joy to be around!
My Story
I joined HP because of the pool. At first, I ran in the water and my goal was three miles. After I accomplished that, it got boring just running in the pool so I decided to create my own routine. I included a little dancing, a little weight lifting and a variety of other things.
I’m often in a lot of pain because I have fibromyalgia, a damaged nerve in my shoulder and a disc missing in my back. The pool is God-sent to me! There is so much peace in the water. Clay has taught me so many more things that I can do in the pool. He has been a great inspiration to me also. Sometimes I stay in the pool for 90 minutes at a time. When I’m done with my workout, I go to the steam room to relax myself!
I contribute my persistence to exercise to my faith in God. I am an Evangelist and I tell people how God can do anything! I realize that if I want them to believe that, I first need to show them how it works for me by taking care of my health.

She has such a sweet spirit that radiates to those around her in the class. She is dedicated and attends classes daily - She is a quiet inspiration to me!
My Story
I moved on Feb 2007 from South Korea.
I was looking for the gym to exercise and that had an indoor swimming pool for my kids.
Many people suggested HP.
It is so clean and the staff is so nice.
At first, I just worked out in the fitness room and I didn't know about the other classes.
But one of my friends led me to the group room in the beginning of September.
That was to Turbo Jam.
The music was great and Christy was so energetic that she encouraged me.
It was rough (until now!) but I couldn't stop to coming to Turbo Jam from that day.
I later starting taking Zumba and Body Pump classes.
I lost just 7 pounds but most of my friends say that I look like I lost more than 20 pounds.
I make it to Turbo Jam 2 days a week, Zumba 3 days a week, and Body Pump 4 days a week
(Tue. & Thu 1hour/ Mon. & Fri. 30min)
The great instructors keep me motivated to keep working out consistently and I am so glad that I found HP!!

I choose HP over other gyms because the atmosphere is awesome (and my mom, Deborah Stinson, being an employee didn't hurt either!)
I LOVE this place!! It really is like the t.v. show, “CHEERS,” where everyone knows your name!
Nomination Letter (submitted by employee and Lauren’s mother, Deborah Stinson)
I often encouraged Lauren when she was younger to be active with some type of exercise program but I was never successful. She started working out when I started working here! She was a size 16 & she is now a size 8!
My Story
I NEVER thought I would be someone who would work out everyday at a gym. I was always intimidated by the "already perfectly-sculpted figures" that were running so effortlessly beside my "half-dying self!" Thank goodness for good ole' HealthPlus! No pressure, friendly folks of all ages who could care less that you look a HOT MESS!
I now work out six days a week: three days of cardio and abs and 3 days of BODY PUMP!!! I've lost 34 lbs. since March '08 and hopefully there's muscle in there somewhere, right now it's champion of the "hide-and-go-seek" in my thighs! I'll get there soon enough...
My first Body Pump class was with Susan on Thanksgiving Day. I assumed she was trying to kill me. I mean, she looked nice?!? Anyway, just before I was going to call my lawyer (ha, ha), Susan came to me and showed me (with all the patience and restraint of laughter that I'm sure she could muster!) what I was doing wrong and she recommended that I give it another try. Great advice! And the best I've ever taken from a "would-be murderer!!" (Love you Susan!) Body Pump is my new best friend! The best part is the compliments I get on my "guns", I mean, arms.
Motivation
Anytime I can go to my favorite clothing stores and try on clothes and not break down in hysterics is ALWAYS a plus. I love seeing my body transformed into anything different than it was when I joined HealthPlus last fall. I was shamefully enormous. I'm still no where near my fitness goal(s) so keeping them before me at all times helps me get up at the crack-a-dawn every morning (for the 5:30 AM class) whether I want to or not.
Words of Wisdom
If you're looking for a new challenge, try Body Pump! It's my new favorite thing in the world. If it was recommended, I would take it EVERYDAY! Check the class schedules and try Body Pump TODAY!!
Joyce Newland - June 2009!

Married for 49 years and counting! We have 5 grandchildren... 11, 8, 4, 3 and 2 months
Retired from 27 years of insurance and investment sales. Currently I do medical transcription on a contracting basis. I also volunteer for Literacy Coalition and Keep Opelika Beautiful.
HP Member since 2001. I have been a member of about 6 other gyms in the area over a period of time. Cleanliness and amenities at HP won us over.
Nomination Letter (submitted by instructor Christy Coleman)
Joyce continues to come to Body Pump and other group fitness classes despite having health issues. Staying active in this way keeps Joyce young and spry in order to keep up with her grandchildren. I’m inspired to keep going because one day I’ll be a grandmother too!
My Story
I TRY to work out 4 times a week (classes and weights). Plus, yard work and walking Fergus (the dog). Operative word is TRY.
I give credit to personal trainer, Robert Reams, for helping with a good individual program, for Robin for the cycling, for all the Yoga instructors (Lori, Becky, Robin & Amy) and for Christy and Lori for really "pumping me up" about the Body Pump classes that I did not think I would like, but it truly helped me in several ways. (Joyce was one of 3 winners in our Body Pump at Lunch contest for highest attendance!)
I stay motivated to work out consistently by a picture of what I would look like if I did not work out -- that and my knees. Seriously!! I have been to physical therapists. The programs that I have done at HP have raised the therapy up just a notch and they are finally making the therapy work for me -- especially the Body Pump classes.
Words of Wisdom
"When I see young girls on a soccer field, or on a swim team, or playing ball, I realize how fortunate they are to have an opportunity and to be able to find limits of strength of their body. For those of us who did not have that opportunity when we were younger, we just have to seize that chance now, and we have to realize that we can push ourselves just that little bit more each time. The challenge can be fun and rewarding."

Gloria and I went to high school together. After a few years of marriage and having a child, she had gained more weight than she wanted. She was always fit in high school and was captain of the cheerleaders. I introduced her to HP and she looks like the captain of the cheerleaders again!
My Story
My rheumatologist recommended the gym with a focus on aquatics, water aerobics and referenced the arthritis foundation classes. This sparked my curiosity, but I did not commit. Even days of great pain with my arthritis, I did nothing. Finally, I think I was just tired of "being tired!" Out of shape, fat, desperate, embarrassed of my weight and embarking on health issues, it was time to get serious, wobbling at 236 pounds, busting out of a size 20!!!!
After my decision to become serious about my health, I began to walk at the track at Southern Union. I could barely get around the track once, but I continued. After some time, I encouraged myself to walk 30 minutes. At the urging of my daughter, who had lost a tremendous amount of weight and had become very health and weight conscious, I continued to increase my time until I could walk one mile, then two and then to three miles. After the summer months, with the days becoming shorter, I knew that I needed to continue while motivated. I was so afraid that after having made some progress, it would all be lost if I did not do something to keep myself active. I also knew that I needed some structure and directives along with the development of a fitness plan, something more than just walking. While walking, I set small goals, changed eating habits, but I had come to a point that I needed an exercise plan. Further, after receiving information that insurance premiums would increase if I did not meet certain health criteria, I knew I had to get myself in shape.
A few years ago, I was a member of another local gym. This was a waste of money because I did not enjoy my workouts, the atmosphere or the facility in general and I did not experience any success. Needless to say, I wasn’t going to consider this gym as an option. After talking with my friend, Deborah Mills, and joining her for a workout at HealthPlus, I was SOLD – super nice facility, exceptionally clean, a courteous, friendly & helpful staff.
My experience at membership and assessment were all positive and professional. HP has a variety of classes to meet individual needs. I have not taken advantage of all classes but it is good to know that the variety is there for transition and change. Never a time have I entered the gym that I was not greeted with a smile! During my first workout, I was lost, but there was someone to assist. Later, I learned that one person who assisted me was a Body-pump instructor. On one occasion, I could not remember my locker number and the receptionist was very courteous in assisting and solving my dilemma. All of the instructors are personable, enthusiastic and encouraging – this is a positive because you do not feel intimidated.
Initially, I visited the gym daily, at least 2-3 days of cardio, 1-2 days circuit training and 1-2 days of Body Pump classes. I try to combine an hour of cardio with circuit training one day and with Body Pump on another day. Some days, I may only do Body Pump or may only do an hour of cardio to a little over three miles.
My short-term goal is to venture into RPM and water aerobics.
With a second job, it is difficult but whenever there is block of time, I try to get to the gym.
My Motivation
First, I am convinced and witness to the fact that exercising and healthy eating really works. I have tried many fad diets; they do not work – there is no quick fix. Coming to the place of wanting to be healthy and of enjoying the little steps of success along the way motivate me. One big motivation is to see the difference of 236 pounds and a size 20W to now a size 8 (some 10’s, depending on the style).
Since I joined the gym, I have lost a total of approximately 76 pounds. My blood pressure is excellent, 90/52!
My cholesterol, glucose, triglycerides and thyroid function are all excellent. The pain from the arthritis has so greatly improved that sometimes I wonder if I really still have it. Most of all, I feel better, I don’t tire easily and I have more energy. It’s all about quality of life!
The weight loss goal and challenges of my daughter was a motivation. I used to say that she is young and can do it, I can’t. I used to focus on all the negatives, to include the fact that I have graves disease. I think I have beaten the odds. Prayer, dedication & commitment!!
When I first began Body Pump, I was one "fat roly-poly" and could not lift even the "baby weights." I struggled to complete the class! When we did the "plank" during the abs track at the end, I just laid out on the floor -- I could not do it. I was so happy that I was finally able to do the "plank" and even lift my leg on the side plank. So excited, that I told the instructor of my success after class. This was and is major to me after many years of being overweight. Now to see how far I have come -- this is amazing to me.
I am motivated also by fact that I do not have to struggle with shopping for the "big girl" clothes. For a long time, I would not wear pants and did not own a pair of jeans. I enjoy being able to look decent in a pair of slacks and/or jeans – this is motivation.
I continue to motivate myself by setting attainable goals and by reaching these small goals! I know that I have to encourage myself to continue to workout even on the days I may want to do otherwise because I know how easy one day will turn into two, three and more until I totally defer from my routine.
Understanding that exercise and eating healthy is a life style and not just something to do is motivation. So, I pencil in the gym just as I pencil in other engagements. I challenge myself and measure myself against myself. Motivation has come from my desire for myself, not in pleasing or meeting the expectations of others.

Nomination Letter (submitted by his wife, Beth Elliott)
40 years ago this past Christmas, Tom’s dad had what he thought to be a heart attack. It "registered" with Tommy and he decided to begin an exercise program. He started out jogging a mile each day. This quickly led to 2 miles, 3 miles, etc. He ran 6 miles everyday and then extra on the weekends. Sometime later, he added weight training to his routine.
The one thing that sets him apart from all other physically fit people (in my opinion),
he has NOT missed a day of exercise in over 40 years!!! I know that seems hard to believe, but I have been married to him that long and I have witnessed it myself.
I have never known anyone so dedicated to his health and exercise. I am so proud of him. He is an inspiration to a lot of people. His discipline has always been a big part of his life.
Tom’s Story (written by Beth)
Tom’s workout consists of the following:
2 hours daily of cardio (machines and walking) 7 days weekly
1 hour daily of weight training 5 days weekly
His motivation to continue consistent workouts is based on the belief that a well-rounded life consists of being physically, mentally, and spiritually fit.
HP is assisting him maintain the physically fit aspect of the formula.

Nomination Letter (submitted by personal trainer, Emily Ansick)
Jesse and his mom came to me for their fitness assessment in February 2009. Jesse’s goal was simple – to lose weight. In just 2 months, Jesse has already lost 15 pounds. His mom always tells me that he is the one that encourages her to come to the gym almost every day during the week and on weekends. Jesse is also a hero in the community! He has raised money for the local fire departments around Salem and even won a community service appreciation award recently. Jesse isn’t only committed to fitness -- he also makes straight A’s and he is in the Beta Club.
He deserves credit for his commitment to excellence in all areas of his life!
My Story
I’m still a fairly new member (2 months). I decided I wanted to join a gym to get more activity and exercise to lose even more weight than my previous activities. My mom & I chose HealthPlus over other gyms because the other gyms only give you the equipment, while HP gives you the equipment with a program of what to do and how to do it. The HP staff will help you and tell you if you are doing an exercise wrong so that you don’t get injured.
My fitness routine consists of cardio 3 days a week (35 minutes each day) and weight lifting/strength training 3 days a week (with a little more cardio time while I wait for my mom to finish). I have lost 15 lbs and 13 inches since starting with HealthPlus.
What keeps me motivated is to lose more weight, increase my stamina and to build more muscle. For members who have just started, I say keep working hard.
A note from Jesse's mom, Carol Stillwell
If it weren’t for Jesse’s determination and motivation, I would not be in the gym at all. I was slim but out of shape. He gets me motivated to come to the gym 6 days a week!!

I have known Jill for many years and she is really trying to lose weight and be healthier!
I feel like she is a good example to others! She is very dedicated to Body Pump and I try and make it to Zumba!
My Story
I choose HP over other gyms because it has a great reputation for having fun classes so I decided to give it a try and I became addicted. I also love the fact that they have a steam room. I try and make it to Zumba 3 days a week and Body Pump 3 days a week. I look forward to going every day! I really enjoy the classes. I always feel invigorated afterwards! The instructors are always there to say something positive and they are always motivating!
I have recently stopped smoking after at least 40 years and coming to the gym has really helped me focus on my health goals. Better late than never!!
There is always a smiling face to greet me at the door and our great instructors to keep me motivated.
I hope I can come for another 20 years.

My Story
I joined HP because I was unhappy with the weight I had gained during my pregnancy with my daughter. I thought the weight would just come off. After three years, it hadn’t, so I knew I had to do something about it. Before joining HP, I had never stepped foot in a gym. My fitness/exercise experience was zero! I was very reluctant to go to the gym, thinking I could never do what was required of me or it wouldn’t work. I was thinking that I wouldn’t have the stamina to do even a basic workout, which was partly true in the beginning.
I chose HP because I had friends at church that were members here and they loved it. I came as their visitor and they took me to Zumba. Can I just say "WOW?" I had never experienced anything like that in my life. When the music started, I didn’t know what hit me. The instructors, Becky Anders and Christy Coleman, were going ninety to nothing. Right then I knew this was no Richard Simmons workout! I made the decision right then that I was going to stick with it. For the first two months I struggled and gasped for air in the class, but loved it. The music was great and it was fun. Becky and Christy, and later Sean, were so nice and motivating that they made you want to come back. I got hooked! It was rough in the beginning, but it was such a laid back atmosphere that I didn’t feel intimidated. Becky and Christy would say, "I don’t care what you do, just move, even mistakes burn calories." My results came quickly and I had a blast doing it. I became a member because I loved that class, and liked my new found energy and weight loss.
A year ago exactly, I weighed 186 lbs. I now weigh 132 lbs. Not only have I lost 54 lbs, but I’ve also lost 10% of my overall body fat in just 6 months, which put me in the low/normal side of body fat for my age and height. I’ve also seen a drop in my blood pressure and resting heart rate. I now have the stamina to even make it through the "cowboy song" in Zumba, so I know I have at least partially arrived.
I also do strength training twice a week. Len helped set me up with an individualized program. He walked me through all the machines and made it so user friendly.
My current fitness routine now is Zumba, Turbo Jam, and strength training twice a week.
My overall experience here has been very positive and everyone at HP has been so nice and encouraging. I would recommend HP to anyone. I am very thankful, and so is my husband, I have found this place.
Words of Wisdom
My new motto for 2009 is "Don’t resist the unknown."
If I hadn’t stepped out, I would never have achieved these results.
And as a word of encouragement, if I can do this, anyone can do it!

My Story
A few years ago, several girlfriends decided to join Health Plus to "get in shape." I laughed and told them I did not think I would join. I have had gym memberships in years past and never went. I actually joined another area gym many years ago and I think I went two times during the whole year.
It just was never "my thing." I was the girl who hated to sweat!
Well, things do change! I joined HealthPlus because I did not want to be left out with my friends and it was one of the best decisions I ever made!
I am a people person so group fitness classes were for me. I really started enjoying coming to classes, working out and, surprisingly, sweating!! Within the group of friends that joined together, I became the encourager and the one who calls to say, "Meet you at the gym." I started out doing Laura's Boot Campclasses and could barely make it to the end of class. I have really seen my stamina increase over time and my confidence in myself as well. I slowly moved from a "back row girl" to the one who fights for a spot up front!
I love coming to HealthPlus each day. (I still can barely believe that I come to the gym almost every day!) It has just become a good habit and I feel like I am missing something if I do not make it. I actually schedule appointments around my gym classes - can you believe that?! :)
Each morning Rosie's kind words and smile start me off right! Christy's Turbo Jam classes and Susan's & Becky's Body Pump classes are a must each week. Torie's Boot Camp & RPM classes are great also. I tell everyone that the instructors at HealthPlus are gifted in what they do but, equally important, they are genuinely kind and caring to the participants in their classes. We are blessed to have them and that is what has made the difference for me!

Madeline Looney - March 2009!
21 years old
Student at Auburn University
I am currently doing my internship at Ogletree Elementary.
I chose HealthPlus over other gyms because of the friendly atmosphere and welcoming environment.
Nomination Letter (submitted by member Julie Dowdy)
I have seen Madeline commit herself to daily exercise and improved eating habits. She has dropped 35 pounds in just 4 months by persevering with her plan. Coached by her trainer, Patrick, she wants to continue with her plan for optimal health and I believe she will do it. She has inspired me to get in there and just do it!
My Story
I have struggled with my weight for most of my life. In August, I decided that I had to make a change. I began training with Patrick. After building up my time spent in the gym, we now train two times a week for an hour and I work out for an hour the other three days of the week. If I had not decided to train with Patrick, I would not have seen the results that I have. It is because of his encouragement that I have lost 35 pounds. Deciding to make a change in my life and having Patrick there to help me along the way are the reasons for my success. Once you start losing weight the benefits, like more energy and looking better, are motivation to keep working hard. I plan to continue working with Patrick to reach my goal.

Married to Bryan Northcutt
We have a 13 month old daughter and I’m pregnant again and due in August!
We own Beacon Insulation.
Building Science Graduate, Auburn University
HP member since 2005. Took a year off then rejoined last year
Nomination Letter (submitted by instructor Lori Fuller)
Claire came to my Low Impact class one (formerly called 50+) by accident. She thought it was Pilates which had just finished. I encouraged her to stay for the class (even though she is far from 50 years old!) I explained that the name of the class is deceiving and it’s really Low Impact for ALL AGES and STAGES, not just for members who are 50 or older!
She told me that she is recovering from an injury and wanted to take it slow so it was the perfect starting point for her. She did GREAT and kept up with everyone well!
Claire always has a smile on her face! She makes fitness a priority, which is not an easy accomplishment since she is a busy mom, wife and business owner!
My Story
I didn’t come to the gym for almost a year and as a result I got out of a daily exercise routine.
After having our first child in Jan. 08, I had two previously injured discs that herniated. I needed to lose the weight I had gained from being pregnant but was in too much pain to exercise. When I got the release from my physical therapist to exercise again, I re-joined HealthPlus (after a year off) and began the Low Impact class. I was extremely overwhelmed when it came to exercising so it was great to have something I could physically do without being in tremendous pain.
It took many months for me to get strong enough to move on to other classes/routines but I finally did and now I can do Turbo Jam (almost!) I take Body Pump on Mon, Wed. and Friday and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I do cardio & machines or Turbo Jam!
I am so thankful that there are classes like the low impact class that cater to someone with injuries (or who's pregnant). Otherwise, I would have never come to the gym consistently. HealthPlus is the best! I love the variety of classes, the facilities are so clean, the location is great, and the staff is very genuine!

James Pudner - March 2009!
18 years old
12th grade at Auburn High School
Soccer player – goalkeeper for AHS Varsity team
Member of HP since May 2008
Nomination Letter
Since beginning his senior year, James has gotten up at 5:30 AM to come to the gym every day for a pre-school workout. He comes a second time between school and his part-time job at McAlisters. He could have easily dropped this routine when he started soccer practice. His dedication to fitness as his number one free time investment has never wavered. In one year, he has gone from a typical, junk-food eating, X-Box playing teenage boy to a healthy, fitness poster child who is an example to his 8 siblings and parents!
Why did you choose HP over other gyms?
I love the facilities and the locker rooms! And, of course, who can forget the coffee and apples??!
What is your fitness routine?
I get to the gym about 6 every morning and do weights, then come back after soccer practice for some cardio.
What keeps you motivated to keep working out consistently?
I eat about 4000 calories a day and I play soccer.

Debbie Smith - February 2009!
HealthPlus member since September, 2002
Lived in Auburn since 1979 when my husband and I moved to attend Auburn's nursing school
Registered nurse at EAMC where I work in the newborn nursery
Been married for 31 years to Mike, who also works for EAMC as an education coordinator
We have two sons: Shane works at HealthPlus as a camp counselor with the children's program and is a college student. Zach lives in the U.S. Virgin Islands on St.John where he has worked and played for the past two years.
Nomination Letter (submitted by instructor Lori Fuller)
Debbie always has a smile on her face, even after she has been up ALL DAY and ALL NIGHT working a long shift as a nurse. Her job can be very fast-paced and stressful (can you imagine listening to crying babies and dealing with hormonal new mothers??! ) She releases her stress by consistently working out. And, when Debbie works out, she means business. No matter how tired she must be, she gives 110+ percent in all of the classes that she takes. I’m always amazed that she pushes herself to exercise AFTER working a long shift when most people would go straight home and go to bed. She has even motivated some of her co-workers to join her and they work out together now. I also admire the variety of her workouts which prevent her from getting bored or burned out!
My Story
While working at EAMC for the past 26 years, I have seen their increased expansion into the community and HealthPlus was a great addition. I love working out at HealthPlus and it has become a regular part of my daily routine. When I first joined, I mainly used the cardio machines and weight machines. Those were great, but after a few months I was getting bored. I quickly discovered the group fitness room and everything changed! First, I learned step aerobics and loved it under the great guidance of Robin. I then went to Boot Camp and other classes that made working out so much fun!
Now I am keeping in shape by attending Zumba, Turbo Jam, and Body Pump! The instructors are so motivating and fun. I love the music and all the moves. I feel like I am taking the most fun dance class when I am in Zumba! I recommend these classes for everyone! Christy, Becky, Sean, and Susan are the best instructors! Their enthusiasm and energy is completely contagious! If you watch people coming out of these classes you will not only see lots of sweat, but also lots of smiles as they feel wonderful after such a good workout!
As for the future, I can only see myself as a lifetime member of HealthPlus.

Olivia Kight - February 2009!
16 years old
10th Grade - Go class of 2011!
Auburn High School
Nomination Letter (submitted by her sister, Alyssa Kight)
Olivia is my younger sister. Since the new year, she has made it a point to come here regularly to get into shape. I really admire her because of her commitment to get healthy.
My Story
Hey, my name is Olivia Kight. I am sixteen years old and a student at Auburn High School. I joined Health Plus about three years ago when I first moved to Auburn. I love going to Zumba and Body Pump! Both classes are fun and relaxed, in an exciting environment. When first starting Zumba, I never got any of the steps right, I was the person moving to the left, when everyone else was turning to the right.
Even now I sometimes find myself a count behind or doing the wrong thing, but it's fun and no one in the class is really watching what other people do, most are just worried about getting in a great workout themselves. But something that the instructors said that helps me out is, "It doesn't matter if you are doing the moves right, just as long as you are moving!" The sad thing is more often than not I am the one doing the wrong moves.
Body Pump was different, but in a very good way. The first night I attended Body Pump I was tired, and the next morning I was sore. But a week later I could start to feel the world's smallest bicep; and I got so excited and couldn’t help but be happy!
Some mornings (when I am not fighting the alarm clock) I get up and go jogging; this is great except I am not a morning person. Usually I work out at the gym at night, or after school. I would highly recommend taking the classes, when ever I am getting tired and want to quit, I don’t just because I don’t want to be the one person in the class not moving! I love HealthPlus and all the instructors and classes that go with it!

My Story
My quest for fitness started many years ago in Athens, GA when I joined a "YMCA."
Group exercises and swimming were my choices. I also played lots of tennis. Moving on from Athens, I followed a pattern of group exercises and tennis at spas in Monterey, CA, Orange Park FL, Columbus, OH, and on to Cherry Point, NC. At Cherry Point, I did group exercise classes in the Air Station gym with other military wives and the Marine troops.
When I came back to Auburn, I started out in KAZ fitness center where I did group exercise classes and strength training.
When KAZ closed, I began looking for a new spa.
After checking out other centers in Auburn, I decided on HealthPlus. It seemed to be a special place and to offer something for everyone. I have not been disappointed. It provides all the group exercise classes and programs I could wish for--"precision cycling" is great and "pilates" is wonderful. The spa is frequently adding new challenges to old routines, like "Body Pump" and "RPM."

Brock Burgess - January 2009!
32 years old
Married to Anna Marie with 3 children:
Luke (10), Catherine (6), and Elizabeth (10 mo.)
HealthPlus Member since 2007
Employed at EAMC (MIS Department)
Nomination Letter (submitted by his wife, Anna Marie)
Brock began working out, seriously, almost a year ago.
His blood pressure was up and he was tired all the time. I had noticed that he just didn't have the energy to do a lot of the activities we used to enjoy.
The gym has been a blessing to Brock. He has lost almost 40 pounds! He looks and feels great. In addition to that his blood pressure is no longer 20 to 30 points above normal.
I am so proud of Brock. With our third baby here, I cannot let him out do me with his new buff body! I am inspired to start using my membership weekly so that I can also enjoy the benefits of including exercise in my daily life!
My Story
Weight has been an issue for me since graduating from college. After seeing the results of my yearly checkup, I realized that my inactivity was catching up with me and it was time to change. Not only was my health failing, but I no longer had the energy to be the father/husband that my family deserves.
HealthPlus is a HUGE part of why I'm still working out on a regular basis. With their wonderful staff, facilities, and classes, there are always opportunities to mix things up and challenge myself. I'd like to give special thanks to Torie (Boot Camp), Laure (Circuits), Patrick (Circuits), and most recently Holly (Body Pump).
They make coming back easy (even though the workouts aren't)
In the past year, I've lost around 35 pounds (6 inches from my waist) and my blood pressure is almost where it needs to be. I still have personal goals to reach but I'm thankful to have such great place to make them happen!
