About Brenda

  • 70 years old
  • Retired from Auburn University
  • I've been taking water aerobics for 17 years but for 10 years at H+

My Story

Water aerobics is my favorite fitness activity because I have arthritis and I've had several spinal surgical procedures. These classes help with my joint pain and mobility. In addition, getting together with the other class members helps make friendships that have lasted some as long as 10 years! I usually take the 5:30 pm class since it's the one that I started taking when I worked. I have taken some morning classes but now that I'm retired, I like to sleep in!

I've taken classes at other places but the H+ staff is the best. Everyone is friendly and the facility is clean. If I didn't do water aerobics, I don't think that I could be as mobile or as active as I am!

About Mattie

  • Member since HealthPlus opened and the pool / aquatic exercise has been a "staple" part of her program
  • Regular schedule is 4 times weekly (2 X in the Pool and 2 X on the fitness machines)
  • A true joy to be around and very inspirational to others and me alike.

"The Water enables you to perform and do things you cannot do on land" and has a huge calmness and peacefulness that is not duplicated any other way.

The increased ability to stretch and increase your mobility, range of motion, balance and endurance is her praise for the water.

Anything that can be done on land can easily be duplicated in the water with different results and often much better.

"Balance-Balance-Balance - something that you can really focus on in the pool"

You can exercise anywhere, BUT not EVERYWHERE has WATER! It's MAGIC!!

Deane's Story

Deane is a true joy to be around and GREAT personal inspiration to others and me alike!

She 'lights up" the pool and probably any other areas of the gym she frequents often including the fitness floor and machines.

Deane's aquatic program started with the "Arthritis Foundation's certified program at H+. She gradually re-gained her balance and coordination. Deane refers to her fitness routine as a workout also for "the muscles between your ears!" This continued effort she puts into her workouts has really gained substantial benefits especially toning the muscles used for balance.

She had advanced tremendously within 2 years and has now moved further to include the "Body in Motion" class where using the tools to increase cardio, balance and toning is continuing to increase her stamina and mobility remarkably!

She has caught on very quickly and the WATER is a major role in her program. Deane regularly uses the exercise machines but the pool is the key to her success.

You can see her smile that warms everyone and you know that she feels great about herself and she truly inspires other to do the same!!!

Deane Autry is A FANTASTIC JOY AND INSPIRATION!!!!!

Arlene's Story

I've been taking water aerobics classes since the first year it opened. I'll come to any class I can fit into my day – which usually works out to be in the evening. Each class is a little different. I like the cardio workout and lots of toning with no pressure on the joints.

Being in the pool every day provides an escape from the rest of life on land. The teachers are encouraging and it's always a fun crowd. I run in the mornings (average 20-30 miles a week) so the water classes complement my running, especially on days when my rheumatoid arthritis kicks up a fuss!

About Debra

  • 51 years young and actively improving!!

Debra's Story

Debra does aquatics daily at 6:00 am with her own workout blend mixed with the water aerobics class taught by Maria on Wednesdays.

She has been active in the water now for 6 years and it starts her day off in a positive way! She regularly works her legs and feet in the workout and the biggest "bonus" reason she enjoys the water so much is that it reduces the swelling of her joints and lower body for the day!!!! (Some of her medications cause the swelling that only the water and buoyancy can provide. She said it's like having compression on your body.)

Measurable benefits from Debra's aquatics workouts include lower blood pressure and increased range of motion due to the added stretching she does afterwards once the body has been worked in the water.

Debra has done Zumba and Yoga but she feels the pool is necessary to have the range of motion needed to fully improve her results in those classes.

Debra says that to be in the water is WONDERFUL! She truly enjoys the total relaxation she gets at the end of her workouts.

She is a joy to be around and a great inspiration to others!!
